This afternoon in the Rio Grande Bosque, I saw a swarm of winged insects emerging from the ground, milling about, and leaving one by one. They were termites ready to fly, mate, and establish new colonies. Photo taken in Albuquerque, N.M. on January 15, 2026.

Got out yesterday searching for some new Year Birds. Found this continuing rare Wood Thrush in a #PortA Texas patch that was digging thru the leaf litter. #Birds #Video

Yeah there’s a lot going on, but ALSO did you know there’s a bird called the “many-coloured rush tyrant” and it looks like this??

I mean, look at him.

Counterpoint: In fact, I do this all the time. I live in a tiny rural town, and the closest movie theater is one town over, I like taking my spouse out on dates, we get dinner and a movie and it's great.

So yeah, he's wrong.

Pritzker: The Insurrection Act is designed for circumstances where your rights can’t be protected by local authorities

This is exactly the opposite.

Your civil rights are being infringed upon by CBP and ICE, and then they want to call in troops claiming that they’re protecting CBP and ICE.

Good news is always welcome and with a h/t to @lizneeley.bsky.social, "it seems that most science agencies now face [only] single-digit percent decreases in their budgets, rather than the devastating version put forward by the White House."

This is surreal. 4 Oglala Lakota men kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis have finally been located. One of them was released but the other 3 are being held at Fort Snelling, a former concentration camp used to imprison Native people incl. the Dakota 38 during Dakota Wars.

As of today I have been alive 20,703 days, and the orbital period of 52692 Johnscalzi is 2078.369 days, so in fact I have been alive 9.96 ScalziYears, I'll be ten on April 4, 2026.

I have marked this auspicious date on my Calendar. AS SHOULD YOU ALL.
My calculations may be off, but I *think* in 52692 Johnscalzi years, John Scalzi just missed his eleventh birthday.

2025 was the third hottest year ever.
Trend is worrying and faster than expected a few years ago.

Only when we stop burning coal, oil and gas, temperature will stop rising.
