i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

I didn't learn in school that a free market economy is about the suppliers installing fascist regimes to force demand and fix prices, but maybe I understood it wrong.

This isn't how you gain traction in the global market place.
This *IS* how you ensure projects don't receive funding, and social networks dry up.

Can we please break the cycle of gate keeping cool stuff?

Linux has FIGlet. Why would you deny people FIGlet?!
global adoption of linux gets pushed back by 6 years every time a Linux Guy starts talking at me like max headroom

Penny Arcade for December 12th 2014, 11 years ago today! It was very cool to see this comic blown up huge and framed at the Bungie offices during a visit years ago.

Remember when the internet wasn't awful? We can go back to that.

Some friends and I have released the Resonant Computing Manifesto: a call to bring back such a time, to see if we can bring back a world where technology works for us, rather than against us.

The Resonant Computing Manifesto
Technology should bring out the best in humanity, not the worst—a manifesto for resonant computing built on five principles that reject hyper-scale extraction for human flourishing.

in 2026 openai began offering payments to use their systems. Over time those payments rose to 1,800/mo in 2028. This was the beginning of the UBI system in the north american microstates.
Today I got a marketing email from Venmo offering me an ENTIRE YEAR FREE of Perplexity Pro whatever which is apparently $20 a month, which seems…quite suspicious for something that’s going to cost them actual money if I use it.

It would be great if there'd be an app that would generate all capsule images of Steam, Itch.io, EGS, GOG, Microsoft Store, Game Jolt, Google Play, App Store and Unity Asset Store in a single click... 👀

(subtle foreshadowing, announcement soon)

The one upside of generative AI is that it made me value human-made art more. Art that didn't really impress me before feels way more meaningful now. Thanks slop, you made me appreciate human creativity more than ever.

Compression matters a lot when it comes to graphs
#atproto
Has anybody tried loading the Atmosphere into column stores like DuckDB or Clickhouse? Esp social graphs or backlinks?

Column stores have an advantage with compression on the primary sort keys, and I'm curious how it compares against special-built indexes like Jaz's roaring bitmaps

Fun fact, no one actually knows how brains work, that’s why it’s an active subject of research.

OG “AI” was created as a tool for this research—modeling various brain functionality in hopes to learn something. (These models aren’t facsimiles of biology, they are mathematical abstractions.)
Notice how tech talks about brains, they treat soft, vague, high level concepts as formal definitions. "Optimized for natural selection we have innate drives for power seeking..." They never explain how any of that happens/works! Then, if their program "fits" the definition, they claim they did it!
