One thing I wrote about here is how technology has made buses *way* more convenient while techno-futurists were obsessed with flying taxis and self-driving cars.

We should be grateful for the work the Science Media Centre does in bringing together experts. Often reporters don’t have the ability (or time) to track down someone who actually knows what they’re talking about for a quote, so this service matters for informed journalism.

Never forget: At breakneck speed we are leaving the stable Holocene climate in which human society developed and thrived. Weather extremes are outside historical experience. Sea-level rise is accelerating. Dangerous tipping points are ahead.

when you're in a city without good transit, it's obvious. you can sit at a cafe for 20 min and never see a bus

despite much griping about auckland transport, if you sit at a cafe here you often see 5+ buses in 20 min. if you sit by the harbour, it's lots of ferries (the best kind of public transit)

Three waters has become a financial disaster for some councils. I spoke to a five-term mayor who says it has wrecked his council and the current reforms appear to be failing www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/3607...

my takeaway from reading 150 years worth of historical transit and planning documents is that the solutions have been known the entire time and studies are just a way for people who don't want change to waste time

This is an excellent contextual unpicking of the Privileges Committee report + recommendations for sanction of TPM's MPs. Journalism like this is essential and we are lucky to have RNZ (+ Phil Smith) to provide it to us.
The House: Parliamentary privileges - Race as an aggravating factor?
Analysis: Reactions and advice from Parliament's Clerk, Speaker and even the committee chair show it has recommended indefensibly harsh punishments.

Today I’ve been asking two questions: When did the Government start work to scale back the pay equity law, and why was that work kept secret?

Living in a 15 minute city is great; I walk a mile in any direction and find myself back at my apartment, with only minor changes. Sure, the noises from the dog park get deeper. After the tenth iteration or so I can't read the signs anymore. But the stranger in my apartment welcomes me every time.
