i exist, that is all, have a good day

just kinda lurking on this website, will mostly be reposting stuff I find cool/interesting. Primarily politics and climate.
Ooh, a year where I actually played games on release

2020: XCOM: Chimera Squad. Pretty enjoyable take on the modern XCOM formula even with its flaws.

2025: Spiritfarer. Just such a lovely game, very much helped me through lockdown.
Quote this with what you would have said your game of the year was at the end of 2020, and what you would say your favourite game of 2020 is now, if it differs

(I will count two-way ties for either answer)

This is entirely immoral: ripping children away from the only homes they have ever know, detaining them and sending them to countries theyve never been to.

It is a abomination and so far outside of Labour values I don't know what to say

Pretty good chart to demonstrate why Labour trying to triangulate is a mental approach.

This is pretty striking and makes me wonder exactly what Labour have been up to in making policy seemingly in response to / fear of the former rather than the middle group.
Why do people think England flags have been raised on lampposts?

Cas Mudde spells out what has become largely the consensus among researchers: moving right on immigration will not weaken the far right nor strengthen social democracy. If your reaction is "but in Denmark" please at least familiarize yourself with Danish politics

I feel like left/liberal discourse in both the UK and US (and presumably many other countries) would be healthier if more people realised “I will not vote for this party out of principle, but it would be better if they won” is an entirely coherent, and respectable, position

VERY funny that Labour are being pointlessly cruel and haemorrhaging support from their base and yet none of what they're offering is ever going to be enough for the people whose approval they're seeking, WHO could have predicted it

Encouraging the policing of public spaces based on appearance and gender stereotypes is no way for a human rights regulator to behave.

The EHRC’s proposed Code of Practice is a misogynist’s charter, and the government must reject it.

That American politics went off the rails after Barack Obama and British ethnonationalism has reared its head after Rishi Sunak is the real tell about how committed some people are to integration and post racial politics.
A country where Sadiq Khan can lead London, Humza Yousaf can lead Scotland, and Rishi Sunak can lead Britain is a country where the racists had *lost*. So much of this vicious bile has come directly after that and almost no one seems to draw the connection

By mimicking Reform to win back support, the Labour government is making a serious mistake. This race to the bottom emboldens Farage, punishes vulnerable people, amplifies racism, and undermines those working to hold communities together.

The thing that bothers me about the whole rhetoric on immigration is that because Britain is quite multicultural everyone knows someone like Joe, be it at work, at your local pub, a family friend, and we’re constantly being told by politicians and media that we’re weird for not hating their guts.

If a Prime Minister is brought down by being too cruel on asylum policy - which is not the most likely option but feels plausible right now, which is new - what does that do the debate? Is it too much to hope that draws some kind of line?

The best strategy for a Labour government is to govern like the sort of Labour government that their voters expected to see in office.

If the next one learns from this, it's a good thing. It will hopefully remind politicians to serve the public good, and not pacify the minority who loudly misdiagnose problems to service their bigotry and/or personal gain

Plans to leave refugees in a state of perpetual uncertainty about where and if they can rebuild their lives are not just performative cruelty, they are counterproductive to integration and the economy. It doesn’t have to be like this - 1/2

again, this stuff is now so completely extreme it becomes distinct from the bog standard "control immigration" mugs etc of Labour leaders past - it becomes central to the turd we call Starmerism, and maybe, just maybe, it can be flushed, from Labour at least, when Starmerism is flushed too

Refugees will continue to exist and the right will continue to be able to attack their presence. I am baffled by the apparent belief that voters will change course because you can point to a figure in a statistical bulletin about something distinct from what voters were complaining about anyway.
This is as bad as anything proposed by Reform.

Leaving refugees in permanent limbo and unable to build a new life in the UK would be a complete abdication of our humanitarian responsibilities

This statement not acceptable and I suspect not sustainable. Large majority of public support principle of asylum, support letting people stay permanently. Majority for that among Labour and other progressive parties’ voters is overwhelming. The Reform voters this is aimed at will never vote Labour
"The era of permanent protection is over"

Is this Labour government really saying it was wrong in principle to let these refugees of the last 75 years to stay, settle and become British - and they believe that should NEVER happen again in principle or practice?
