Hearing AOC in Nemik's voice (complementary)

"Remember this, Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly.

Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear."

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

The next Supreme Court term is shaping up to be the most consequential since 1937. Depending on how it rules, it may cease to be accepted as a legitimate arbiter, and even nullify its own power as an independent judiciary.

Same.

The main aliens were just a little too much [various things go here] plus nowhere near as interesting as the Tines (although in fairness, who is?), the knife thing reappearing suddenly seemed like TMI, & I fundamentally disagreed that the insoluble problem with augmented collab was insoluble.

Means testing costs money.

It makes conservatives feel like they are preventing abuse (benefits going to the "wrong sort"?), while also codifying abuse (questioning people's need, excluding people with needs from the benefit).

The cheapest way to provide benefits is not to means-test them.

They always want to attract moderate voters and yet they always cut the material reasons they might do so. Sorry but I don't think the diner class wants to "only" have their premiums go up substantially instead of catastrophically and still foot the bill enough for high income tax breaks.
Dems open to income cap on ACA subsidies
An income cap is almost essential to a potential deal.

I know it seems mysterious, but it's just because it's a WHOLE lot easier to wreak havoc and destroy things, smash and grab, than it is to collaborate and painstakingly build up useful things that can endure.

It's difficult at times to hold both "this admin is doing lasting and serious damage to our institutions and the globe" and "this admin is full of the most bafflingly incompetent idiots you've ever seen who fall over themselves like a Vaudeville act constantly."

The duality of man is incredible.

As a whole, kinda falls betw The Last Question & LOTR…rewired my brain a bit!

This is a great (too short!) thread about Robert Heinlein, how terrible he was in so many ways but why some of us find much of his work admirable.

Stranger in a Strange Land is a pretty bad book all told. But it changed my life when I read it at thirteen.
trance.bsky.social
Okay the edible is kicking in and I'm still exhausted (but much better) after last night's grief storm.

So let's talk about why Heinlein is so beloved by many, while so many others walk up to that table with boxes of problematic going 'how in the fuck'

Humans evolved a cognitive 'social proof' system for establishing what's true (if enough of the people around me believe something, I'll go along) and media fragmentation + social media has completely and totally hijacked it

Feels like AI will only make this worse
lordbusinessman.bsky.social
"no in the future people will cryptographically verify what's true and-" no they will not. People are fucking stupid.

so for no reason at all I was thinking about what Democrats should do if the AI bubble pops in the near term and Trump needs a stimulus bill

they should take a page from constitutional monarchies and demand a new set of ministers

Miller, Vought, Bondi, Hegseth, Kennedy, Lutnick out at minimum

I’m not a political strategist or a social psychologist, but to me this seems true and important. Values must be activated. Surviving a real crisis takes real leadership.
Highlighted: “We've learned, hearteningly, that majorities seem to harbor a deep attachment to liberal rights and liberties, one that instinctively recoils at masked kidnappings, at hypermilitarized vehicles on urban boulevards, at the trappings of totalitarian dictatorship. But this must be activated. That takes conflict and controversy-powerful imagery and language that rivets attention.”

This morning I turned on my phone only to find that it had changed my user name to Shirley, and when I tried to enter a simple Google query it came out as "Do you like gladiator movies?"

Then I realised it was in Airplane! mode.

Some seem to think it explains too much, but I love how it folds into the narrative & fleshes out Wolfe's Great Chain of Being.
