this is big, and it’s wild that it needed to be crystallized into law. the 2022 anti-homeless craze that afflicted blue state govs and mayors was (and is) so callous and murderous.
A small victory for people and direct services organizations who help their unhoused neighbors in California: As of January 1, it should (theoretically!) be illegal to punish people for offering outreach and support.
Cities can’t punish outreach workers for helping homeless Californians under new law
A new California law going into effect Jan. 1, 2026 prevents cities from penalizing outreach workers who provide services at homeless encampments.

A thing I'd recommend is taking some time to write a letter to you in six months. Screw a new years resolution: resolve what kind of citizen you'll be in 2026.

Making your decisions now helps in the moment when things will seem confusing. Write down your road map: what is good and valuable?

Or be that leader if you have the chance
Xmas Day 1996, Sinai Desert, Egypt. I was in back of a pickup heading to 3-hour guard duty shift. There was a 1st Lt. in back. Officers didn’t do guard duty. He was taking a guard shift for one of his troops because it was Xmas.

Hope everyone has a leader like that at some point in life/career.

If you ever feel imposter syndrome, remember that people actually take Matt Yglesias seriously.
This is a surgical dismantling of yet another dumb Matt Yglesias argument by a former clean energy exec and current Representative. This is the sort of thing that should make people stop listening to people like Yglesias.

Read the whole thing.
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

cis people on the skyline are genuinely more distressed by karoline leavitt’s lip fillers than the fact that congress just said, “what we should do is put any doctor or pharmacist in prison who gives lifesaving medical care to this specific kind of child we find gross.”
Bluesky tonight is neatly divided between trans people and family members appropriately angry and freaking out and everyone else who has barely noticed.

As a Minnesotan I can tell you that this man is more upset at ICE than he was when Gary Anderson hooked it wide left in the ‘98 NFC championship game.
I genuinely don't know if this is a "Minnesotan" thing or an "old guy of a certain age" thing but in case it's Minnesotan and people need an anger translator: this guy is so angry he could just about set something on fire with his mind.
