I'm bookmarking this for the next time someone asks me exactly what does 'a structural edit' mean. This may be a screenplay not a novel, but it's an excellent example of the principles and process regardless.
Nine years ago Mike Fitzgerald wrote up an extraordinarily fascinating breakdown of the differences between the Tom Stoppard shooting script and the original Jeffrey Boam draft of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

It's well worth your time: www.creativescreenwriting.com/indiana-jone...

Using the belief that creators are the "petite bourgeoisie" to justify pirating books/stealing art is EXACTLY what makes it so hard for anyone who isn't rich to pursue their creative dreams

If you steal our art, you PERSONALLY are preventing us from building sustainable careers
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.

I guess this explains the AI boom a lot. Nobody wants to put time into making things because the audience refuses to actually pay any attention to it anyway. Nobody wants to make the things and nobody wants to watch it. What's the point? What are y'all doing here?

almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

95% of authors are not making a living through book publishing. The public needs to understand this.

you can judge the extent of a legal fuckup by the volume of audible laughter coming from the lawyers of bluesky and in this case I think we're at jet engine levels
Sure. "The Grand Jury did not see the operative indictment" is the kind of fuckup where lawyers literally don't actually know what happens next because it SO fundamental a thing that it is LITERALLY possible nobody had even thought of this as a thing that could happen.

authors you have the chance to do the funniest thing right now
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

I do not want to “Do my own research.” I want to pay trained accredited experts to do the research, trained accredited experts to report on findings, and trained accredited experts to make policy based on them.

I am busy af with my own job, I don’t need to do eight zillion more.

Earnest post: there is increasingly direct evidence that Trump participated in child sex trafficking or at least knew about it.

He should resign, be impeached and removed from office, and prosecuted.

Even if you don’t think that WILL happen it’s important to say publicly that it SHOULD happen.

I was in bed at 830 last night (yay sleep regressions), so I didn't see the Northern Lights. Crossing my fingers that I'll be up long enough tonight to maybe get a picture.

BUT I have this pretty picture from yesterday morning.

I know many new writers worry about how readers will receive their work. That’s a valid concern! That said, two things:

1. This gig is only worth it if you write what YOU want.

2. Some will hate your stuff, but some will like it. Your readers. They’re awesome. Write for them.

100% this.

If you can't find joy in the act of writing, and feel euphoria after editing several drafts into exactly what your thoughts had in mind (or close to it), then I really suggest you don't become a writer.

The idea, the thoughts, are nothing without execution. The work is the thing.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

I feel like I'm screaming into the void every single time that I call my Senators (Budd and Tillis) and Rep (Mark Harris). I'm going to do it tomorrow anyway.

We're stuck with Budd until '23.

Thank fuck Roy Cooper is running for Tillis's seat next year.

Harris is up for re-election in '26. 1/3

Remember, gang, if you’re yelling insults at ICE, stick to things that will be deeply humiliating if they’re read aloud in court. Consider “Your parents only love you out of obligation, not because they like you,” “l bet you jerk off to the Teletubbies” and of course, the Yo Mama joke.
It's not just here but in some charged threat cases where DOJ is treating, "you're a Nazi" or "you're a fascist" as a threat rather than a reasonable observation.
From Bovino's deposition: (1) he calls protestors "violent" if they articulate views hostile to ICE, even if no violence is manifested; (2) he instructs his forces to attack and arrest protestors who express "hyperbolic comments," which is to say, criticism of ICE and Bovino.

If you're in the US, this is your reminder to vote today.

Even if it's "just" for your local school board or town council because those elections are so freaking important.

I don't have any local (to me) elections this year, but I'm watching a nearby town council election closely.
