the us military is not conscripted. they volunteer to do explicitly evil shit for money. you don't have to pity these people when bad stuff will happen to them, and certainly don't need to pretend they have any nobility at all to their actions.
Perhaps now people will stop wishcasting about the US military refusing illegal orders. That's not a thing that happens. The 100% compliance rate with using civilian boats for target practice was a bit of a tell.
