I'm not sure most folks are aware of the immense magnitude of loss this would entail for the global weather and climate community, and beyond. NCAR has played a greater cumulative role in advancing weather prediction and atmospheric modeling than perhaps any other single entity in the world.

Here's our reporting on the proposed dismantling of the jewel of US atmospheric science, @ncar-ucar.bsky.social.

The plan is to break NCAR apart and disburse some parts to other locations (like the research aircraft fleet) and eliminate others.

Excellent thread
So, to those who say "masks don't work", cite the flawed Cochrane report, insist upon an unfeasible RCT, accuse folks of panic, and undermine public health on social and mainstream media during a flu/RSV epidemic...

I think the four pieces I edited by incarcerated queer journalist B Speaks may be the thing I'm proudest of this year. Speaks is an incredible writer, with an ability to take you into the world of the GA prison, and its trans and queer inmates, that takes my breath away.
In August, we got a bit of extra money from a generous donor, and I used it to expand into coverage of trans life in American prisons.

This piece, by incarcerated journalist B Speaks, describes the chaos Georgia's forced detransition regime, currently halted by the courts, wreaked in one prison.
EXCLUSIVE: Forced Detransitions ‘Nearly Toppled’ Medical Unit in Georgia Prison During Care Ban — Assigned

The real task isn’t “teaching people to spot misinformation.” It’s rebuilding conditions where verification, deliberation and accountability are possible. Critical thinking only works when the world around it gives those skills a place to take root.

It only took four of us making a two-minute public comment about the library at the city council meeting for the councilors to restore the funding the mayor’s office had cut.
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.

This is class warfare via crimes against public health.

The US is close to an institutional collapse across multiple public health agencies. Trump/RFK have purged anyone with expertise, many have fled and they’ve been replaced w functionaries who are either incompetent or malicious. I don’t think many understand how close to the edge we are right now.

and when those of us who do understand urge caution, mitigation, community care, we're scoffed at.

things are so dire—masks may not always feel spectacular but the diseases our leadership is cultivating feel worse.
we’re in an extraordinary time that calls for extraordinary action. wearing a respirator may not feel extraordinary, but when masks are stigmatized if not criminalized, it becomes so.

it’s a helluva lot harder to #Resist without your health—preserve what you & your community have. mask up.
last night, someone on tiktok asked
me how wearing a mask is antifascist, so i answered: unfortunately, even passive, austere eugenics works faster if YOU participate.

so step up: stand out, mask up, and take care take care take care for yourself & others—before those who seek to harm stop you.

A medical professional working while they know they are sick with a highly contagious disease is an absolute failure by the individual.
It is also a complete failure of the place they work for allowing this type of behavior.

I'm so tired of measles.

I'm also tired of people using needle shots on stories like this.

DOGE isn’t gone. The 19-26 year olds burrowed in to the agencies they were assigned to. We’ve got dozens of unqualified 19-26 year old GS15s still pursuing Musk’s agenda, which is stealing everyone’s PII/data, all contracting info, moving it onto his servers, & mining it for his profits. 1/
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
