these are fabulously joyful: do read them and cheer yourself up: "Hatless and barefoot under my parasol on a summer day, I watch a burly fellow working a well-pump and singing Suzhou folk songs. The water comes up in a sudden burst, like a spill of silver coins or a gust of snow"
In 1657, Jin Shengtan 金聖嘆 broke off from his commentary on 'The Romance of the Western Chamber' to list "33 Nice Things" 不亦快哉三十三則.
It's one of the most likable things I know of in any language. I translated it to cheer myself up a while ago, if anyone could use it. www.burninghou.se/p/whats-good

I’ve gotten back into ACNH in advance of the update and their turkey day thing is DEEPLY charming. Everyone is wearing matching straw hats and dancing around the table.

My personal favorite dish this year was just these straight up baked sweet potatoes that you parbake in the microwave. I served them with cinnamon honey compound butter. It’s a tremendous method if you like sweet potatoes. www.americastestkitchen.com/recipes/9903...

One of my boyfriend’s friends heard each of us separately tell a story about the water heater dying and said that she was struck by how complimentary each of us was about the other in our respective versions.
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

My nephew: Are you a girl or a boy?
Me: a boy, I used to look more like a girl but then I turned into a boy
Nephew: How???
Me: I went to the doctor and they gave me some medicine
Nephew: …
Nephew, bragging now: I’M a boy and I didn’t even HAVE to go to the doctor

Onion soup on Christmas Eve and often lasagna on Christmas but definitely a Christmas braid, a tradition that seems to have emerged from the ether.
it fascinates me how most everyone in the U.S. does turkey for Thanksgiving, but we are all over the map as to what we eat for Christmas (as is proper for a hugely diverse nation).

I come from a Christmas prime rib roast family, myself.
I also use the bacon method. Although turkey is Christmas dinner where I come from.

this is a deeply unsettling fact to have learned at 1am
Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle.

2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%.

The average human is around 20-40%, for reference.

They're *all* muscle.

it is very funny that it feminizes you to admit that you are enjoying something because it's "good" so the entire industry had to collectively work out a secondary characteristic of beer to describe
