Peak water levels in the #Miami area have been above the minor flooding threshold for the past four days, and our tide forecasts show that continuing for at least the next ten days! #KingTide

The world has lost its most powerful advocate for nature and hope. Yet many remain who will continue her legacy and I know she will continue to inspire generations more.

The Twin Cities will flirt with 90˚ highs both Friday and Saturday.

They've only had 3 days with 90˚+ highs in October since 1872.

Happy Fall. 🥵

AOC: I think there's two things that are happening at once: One, there absolutely is an unprecedented abuse of power, destruction of norms, erosion of our government and our democracy in order to prop up an authoritarian style of governance

However, they are weaker than they look…

How about *only* hurricane pairings in the Atlantic and for the entire period of record (since 1851). What are the closest two hurricanes have ever been recorded? Humberto and Imelda right at the top. The nearest reliable contender was Easy and Fox back in 1951.

And with the 15z advisories -- #Hurricane #Imdelda & #Humberto are just 479 miles apart.

This might be the closest two simultaneous hurricanes have ever been in the Atlantic basin in the satellite era (since ~1975).

Close enough for their outer sfc circulations to interact as well.

An unprecedented violation of our civic and Constitutional traditions. Calling every military leader in the world back to the U.S. to hear a wildly inappropriate partisan campaign speech followed by a fascist call to use the military against Americans.

The president just gathered the highest ranking officers in the military to tell them that he may order them to kill American citizens -- and that they better follow his orders. All in response to a series of crises that have no basis in reality.

I don't know how to yell any louder.

Reminder than if the government shuts down, "emergency employees," such as NWS meteorologists, are exempt from furloughs and expected to report to work unpaid. However, the White House is threatening RIFs across agencies and NOAA's shutdown plan has not yet been posted to the OPM website.

Yes it's pretty darn unusual to see two #hurricanes in the North Atlantic basin this close. #Imelda & #Humberto.

It has happened recently w/ weaker TCs (e.g., #Philippe & #Rina in 2023), but unsure the last time both systems involved in binary interaction were both ≥65 kt in the NATL.

Kudos to Google Deep Mind AI.
This graphic is from Sept 25 when most models were showing a landfall of #Imelda in NC/SC.
Google AI has consistently been showing a hard right turn. There were a couple of runs where it was closer to the coast, but overall the theme from Google AI was “out to sea” 1/

Imelda & Humberto. Without Imelda, Humberto would be more of a threat to the Southeast. Without Humberto, Imelda wouldn’t be expected to turn sharply out to sea and would be a greater rain threat to the Southeast. It might be more of a hybrid cyclone, too.

Of the 44 Category 5 hurricanes in the past century, 12 of them occurred in just the past decade. But perhaps more impressive is that of the three hurricanes in this season so far, two of them were Category 5s!

Even with the best tools we have, it's a challenge for models to accurately predict rapid intensification.

The models that did show Humberto rapidly intensifying were also a bit too slow and quite a bit delayed with RI vs. observations.

This is just about as perfect a hurricane as you'll ever see in the Atlantic.

It looks like Humberto is now a Category 4 hurricane. Even earlier this morning, the NHC didn't expect Hurricane Humberto to reach Category 4 until Monday.

That means all 3 hurricanes so far in 2025 have reached Cat 4 or higher — that's never happened before.

The synoptic setup for Potential TC Nine has evolved. The most important is the upper low near the Southern Appalachians. No model related issues with steering features are causing model uncertainty. (1 of X)
