More experiments in knitting! I was testing out stranded color work, and I’ve heard about the importance of color dominance, so I tried the motif twice, once with the green dominant and once with the blue. What a difference! You can barely see the wavy line on the second repeat.

Fun with knitting! Before I start my second pair of socks, I wanted to try out some different stitch patterns with a couple colors of yarn to see what looks good. I also wanted to try stranded color work for potential wrist warmers, so I used the brim of a hat in progress so I don’t have to cast on.

Took an FMLA day to stay home today, but reluctantly because our heat’s still out and I’d at least be warmer at work. Luckily, someone’s coming to fix it today. It’s been pretty consistently 60-62 F in here without the heater, so I’m bundled in my winter coat.

For like the zillionth time: Libraries are FREE for you, but WE still get compensated for our work!!
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

Frankie’s newsletter is great even if you’re not much of a sports person, like me! They do a great job tying their sports reporting to the bigger picture of society overall. They make it easy to understand why the things they cover matter beyond just the game itself. Highly recommend!
I've shared some real talk on what it's been like since leaving Substack and how you can help. This newsletter is not AI slop and it is written by a human (me!), and I pay other people to help me create the product you receive in your inbox on a regular basis. But I can't do it without you!

Of course it would be this week we discover the heating is having a problem! 😂 We didn’t need it until a few days ago, only to find it shuts off after running for just a couple minutes. Don’t know if it’s the furnace or the thermostat, but resetting the thermostat didn’t fix it.

For my followers, throw Frankie a sub if you can!

When people talk about intersectionality in women’s sports journalism, there’s few if any that do it better.
Full disclosure: I’ve lost nearly 40 paid subscribers since leaving Substack and this newsletter is 2/3 of my income. If you want to support an independent trans journalist, this is a great way to do so. bit.ly/ooylsagseaso...

Finished knitting my first pair of socks! I’m really happy with them as a first attempt. They fit comfortably and I had fun making them. I can tell my knitting improved subtly between the one I finished a couple months ago and the one I finished last night!

As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

Met with my supervisor today and heard I’m doing well with my new job so far! And she was suggesting strongly that I could eventually move up to supervisor from here. (If I want to, which I’m not at all sure I do, but we’ll see, maybe in a few years.)

I made an applesauce cake last night and it turned out really well! It’s a recipe from my America’s Test Kitchen cookbook, and they’ve all been delicious so far. Very apple-y tasting snack cake. A lot of moisture in it, and it’s a little delicate, but fluffy. I like that it doesn’t need frosting.

Lol, just as I thought I was nearly done knitting my 2nd sock (finishing my 1st pair), I realized I made a mistake on the placement of the toe decreases. I ended up undoing the entire toe area and starting over, but I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t mind having to undo/redo knitting mistakes.

Very nearly done knitting my first pair of socks! I’m doing the toe decreases on the second sock now. I’ll take a picture before I put them in the wash the first time. (They’re meant to be machine washable, so I’m going to test that as soon as I can. See if they survive and whether they shrink.)

I've seen this go by a few times on TikTok now and I have to say, I love this idea. We need a way to convince people to keep running even if they don't win, maybe building the loss into it as a troll move is the secret.

This is going to be @governor.ca.gov's legacy if he doesn't stop persecuting unhoused people and throwing trans people under the bus. And he will fail just like Cuomo did.
"If his campaign didn't inspire anyone, at least it cemented his legacy the way we should all remember it. As a man who will do anything, say anything, hurt anyone, just to keep a grip on power." Great piece from @davecolon.bsky.social nygroove.nyc/andrew-cuomo...

I don't want anyone to starve. I don't care who they voted for. If we live in a world where I decide who gets to live based on whether or not I personally like them, we are fucking lost in the weeds.

That's also Trump's vision of America.

I really appreciate the people here highlighting the increased need for food bank donations with SNAP benefits about to be cut off!

That was the reminder I needed to set up a monthly donation to my local food bank. It’s only $20, but they can buy a lot more food with it than I could.
important reminder: food banks usually prefer money to direct food donations because they can buy at discounted rates

check with your local food bank to be sure but now is the time to help out

If you can afford it, a *monetary* donation (it goes a lot farther!) to your local food bank would be a most excellent thing to do right now.
I want more people to care that SNAP benefits are being cut off on November 1. 40% of SNAP beneficiaries are children. This is callous and vile.

I know I’m extremely late to the party, but I enormously enjoyed @tkingfisher.com’s Nettle & Bone. Just a terrific read about human characters who happen to be Princesses and Witches on a crazy road trip to kill a dude who has it coming. 5 stars from me, will read again.
