NEW: The Hubble and Chandra space observatories have uncovered an elusive type of black hole hidden in the outskirts of a galaxy. Weighing less that 1 million solar masses, it is a missing link in black hole evolution between small and supermassive black holes: bit.ly/3TNAEqw 🔭 🧪

It's ok to look after yourself.
It's ok to get some rest.
It's ok to wear a crown of goblin bones to your nephew's birthday party.
It's ok to grow a coat of moss, disappear into the forest, and become a creature of folklore and legend.

Sorry to share a tweet, but this is from a friend who is not on BlueSky and got turned away from voting today for seemingly spurious reasons.

If you have a problem with voting like this call 866-OUR-VOTE to get help, they’re open 9am-11:59pm ET on weekdays, 10am to 9pm ET on weekends.

I hate hate hate hate these chodes who think we need to get to Mars to save humanity. There are zero scenarios that could ever make Earth as deadly as Mars. Zero.

I’d love if we went to Mars. Of course! But for science!! Not as a “backup planet.”

Adding to this: the volunteers are usually doing this thinking they’re helping. Please don’t be unkind to them- at best, you’re ruining someone’s attempt at a good deed, at worst, you’re confirming an “evil queers and libs are out to get us” agenda.

Don’t give them a cent! But don’t flip them off.
I know it's a tad early but I know those bitches with the buckets will be out soon. Don't gove them a penny. The volunteers may not know but the salvation army is no ally and actively combative and harmful to many queer minorities especially during the holiday season

I'll add just this: The feeling that the fascist leader is inevitable is a phantasm that they all prop up, in order to cow their opposition. You can't fight "inevitable."

We don't have to prop up the myth. Trump isn't inevitable. He lost in 2020. He loses every time he stands trial.

I haven't checked the solar forecast yet but this is an important point! Night mode on your cell camera is a much longer exposure than your eye.
We found getting good and dark did lead to a better view, but the intensity is still less... Examples below from our house versus a dark field..

the NYPD is also arresting and brutalizing student protestors at City College. i haven’t seen much coverage of this on here but the students at NYC’s public colleges are being subjected to the same violence as the students at Columbia.

The news this morning that Columbia is now threatening to call in the National Guard on protests that include faculty and students points to an administration trying to hold on to power it simply doesn’t and shouldn’t have. www.msn.com/en-us/news/w...

President Biden has signed a law that would ban TikTok in the U.S. unless it is sold within a year.

The law is not expected to cause any immediate disruption to TikTok, as a forthcoming legal challenge, and various hurdles to selling the app, will most likely cause months of delay.
President Biden signs law to ban TikTok nationwide unless it is sold
The measure was included in a foreign aid package providing support to Ukraine and Israel. TikTok has vowed to challenge the law in federal court.

The eclipse shows how ingrained Astro is into humanity. People love this stuff, are transfixed by it. Then people ask why we need to fund astro.

Same for humanities. Millions flock to museums. We pour money into making films and worship their stars. But the value of the humanities are questioned.
