When I lived in LA 97-99 (and you may recall this @davidjroth.bsky.social), Rob Reiner led the smoking ban in bars. I couldn’t believe bars could exist without cigs. And I don’t even smoke.

He kickstarted all of it. I still go to bars. I never have to Febreez my clothes.

So, also that.

He's also responsible for raising all the money that paid for bringing Hollingsworth v. Perry & even more importantly Bostic v. Schaefer, which created the circuit split that forced SCOTUS to take on Obergefell v. Hodges. The role he played in American marriage equality cannot be overstated.
The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

This is beautiful.
Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.

Rob Reiner was one of the key people behind the effort to go to court to overturn California's anti-marriage equality Proposition 8 when it passed in 2008.

Working with Chad Griffin, they founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights and got Ted Olson and David Boies to team up to fight Prop 8.

If I don't love When Harry Met Sally, I don't watch Sleepless in Seattle.

Which planted a seed that maybe moving across the country made sense.

Thirty plus years later it still was the absolute right decision. Not the only reason I did it, but it refined the idea.

So thank you, Rob Reiner. RIP.

I love stories like this, not bc I have any particular attachment to the specific new product, but rather bc it is a new tech that makes me say "oh neat!" or even "oh, interesting!" instead of "*sigh*"

Posting this to my timeline to remember to call my state electeds. I know California set up a Western alliance but it would be good to actually hear them regularly refute the vaccine crap coming out from the FDA this week
"One shouldn’t only look at the risk side [of vaccines]. One has to also look at the benefits side." — A former high-level #FDA vaccine regulator talks about Vinay Prasad's recent missive to staff. Phil Krause likes some of what he read, but thinks there are problems. www.science.org/content/arti...

First off yes!

The Dems don't seem to understand the insidiousness of AI and what world these tech bros are trying to create.

People do though. We must keep yelling "to what end?" when we're force fed AI like two packs of cigarettes jammed in our mouths and lit with a flamethrower.

I heard this afternoon that the dog had to be put down bc of its injuries.

My argument is this: as humans, if we take a life - any life - we need to absorb that into our soul and own it. We are marked by it. A robot on wheels can't do that.

We cannot have a social contract with a machine.

Open AI doesn't want to be transparent about what's in their datasets - this bill would force them. If you're pro AI regulation (esp if you're in Bay Area), please show up and offer your support for this bill! If you can't make it, help spread the word!

Is it me or is it weird security protocol that the ranking senator on the intelligence committee walks around with an Oura ring on his index finger?

Warner was on Jen Psaki. He's not usually a bejeweled fellow so I noticed.

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.
