I think a lot of the new modern forms of neuroses we have are coming about from thinking we’re all trapped in a panopticon. The idea that very normal things like relationships or reading is performative or embarrassing comes from an implicit belief that you’re only value is how you’re seen by others

I will say it is incredibly disheartening for every earnest effort I make and those I see others make knowing we will toil in relative obscurity our entire lives, yet people who sell insane fantasies and blatant lies to the wealthy will never go hungry.
