so much is downstream of the problem that the Democratic Party does not, as such, exist
Leaving aside the (bad) merits of the decision, it's clear that Schumer and Jeffries did not gameplan this situation in advance or do any work to coordinate a plan to other elected Dems, much less to Dem voters.

If Chuck Schumer enjoys a single day in NYC for the rest of his life without being told to go fuck himself at least once, then NYC will have utterly failed as a society.

the Democratic party leadership has been working under the delusion that anyone demanding they fight must also be an ideological leftist, easily ignored as such

I think today may finally disabuse them of that notion -- a whole lot of mainstream libs and even centrists are clearly mad as hell
folks on here have made the point that the impulse to fight vs accomodate is basically orthogonal to the left/centrism axis in the democratic party. there are plenty of people in the left/fight quadrant and plenty in both centrist/fight and centrist/accomodate. is there anyone in left/accomodate?

SCHUMER: “the alternative would be worse” as he caves to avoid a shutdown, as Trump’s budget guy says the CR will be ripped up and Trump/musk will decide all

BERNIE: Dems helping pass a CR they had no input on so Musk and Trump can keep hurting people is “not how democracy works”

I have to say: Chuck Schumer is a weak man and a fool. This was the one cudgel Dems had. Now it's up to the courts which we new from the beginning were at best going to slow some things down. There's 18 hours left to somehow bring additional pressure to bear. It will be really hard to do that.

@schumer.senate.gov If you vote for cloture you are a stain on this country’s history that will never go away. You are willingly passing power to a tyrant in waiting, and you are a disgrace to every oath of office any senator has ever sworn. Your legacy will be one of cowardice and contempt.

But wait a second, aren't Trump and Musk already shutting down government agencies selectively, which is what Schumer says he wants to avoid?
Hmm. Maybe this argument is not very cogent.
Opinion | Chuck Schumer: Trump and Musk Would Love a Shutdown. We Must Not Give Them One.
A government shutdown would lead to real pain for the American people.

Good on Congresswoman McBride for ignoring the asshole.

Even better that Keating blew a gasket.

Do not normalize these fascist fucks and their cruelty.

Ever.
Watch this.

Now you know what today’s assignment is.

It’s time to rage, y’all.

The ignorance, the disrespect, the bigotry have no place in Congress in 2025.

Give them hell. I know I will be.

In case you are confused by recent events this may help clarify a few things.
"Material acquisition is not the goal of the criminal elite, and debt is not a problem. A lifestyle of total impunity, powered by fraud and threat, is the goal. Raw power is not measured in money but by how little you need it. Money is beneath you when you live above the law."

I think a unified Senate Democratic caucus going to war on Trump and Musk over the power of the purse with shared messaging and clear emotional stories of why they're doing it would be very powerful and would undercut the "you're the minority shutting down the government" counter message
