CS: I think right now, we're more aware than ever that there are different types of people with different types of experiences and stories that have historically not been at the forefront of culture. But we can speak to those stories directly and they can still mean different things to different people. Jacob and everyone involved in the show wanted to honor the experience [of gay romance] that we're exploring in this story. But that's different from the question of, Who is this for? If you look at the fans of this book series, they defy our preconceived notions of who would be into a story about gay sex and gay love. The very surface level idea is: This is for gay men. Then you look at the readership and most of the people who are reading this series are women. Then I was in some meetings a few days ago, and someone said, "You know, your show has the lesbian community down bad." And that's even one more step removed from our expectations! Not only are we talking about women, but now we're talking about women who aren't even into men. Again, the very surface level idea of sexuality is: If a woman likes guys, and these sex scenes have two guys, then maybe we can understand why they like this. But the lesbian community really enjoying this show? That makes zero sense if you're still going by old rhetoric. I think it just shows that people can relate to humanness, to a human experience, regardless of whether or not it's their experience.
