"Cat Proximity," the 231st instalment of the webcomic XKCD by Randall Munroe. The image is a single panel implicitly divided into two parts. The top part is a double line graph, where datasets of two different units and ranges are shown on the same graph in order to enable easy examination for simultaneous changes. The x-axis is labelled "Human proximity to cat", with the left end being labelled "far" and the right end being labelled "near". The two values graphed on the axis are labelled "Intelligence" and "Inanity of statements". "Intelligence" starts out higher than "Inanity of statements" and both remain fairly level as the x-value begins to increase from 0, but after a time, "Intelligence" starts to fall and "Inanity of statements" starts to rise, both at the same rate, until they intersect, and then continue going in opposite directions. I was made aware of yet another blogpost on segmented type, and in a happy accident, it was one I hadn't seen before!

While I'd spent many happy moments fiddling with @aresluna.org 's segmented type site, Emily Sneddon's "Fran Sans" font and the story there was enchanting.

Good post. This is my personal primary complaint about the MTA ending the monthly pass.

Monthly passes encourage ridership: you no longer think about whether to use transit, you already have it covered.
Upfront sunk cost vs. incremental per-trip costs The shift away from prepaid passes to fare capping changes the whole psychology of how riders evaluate the cost of travel using mass transit—and the approach being taken by the MTA and other agencies across the nation run counter to what is considered best practice elsewhere in the world. When you purchase a prepaid unlimited pass, that is, for right or for wrong, a sunk cost. Therefore, the marginal cost of each additional trip you take is zero. In fact, you are encouraged to use mass transit as much as possible to squeeze the most value out of your pass. Pre-pandemic when I would have a LIRR monthly, if I was going into the city on a weekend, taking the train was a no-brainer...since it didn't cost me anything extra.
