And while I am filled with incredible gratitude for what this opportunity did for me, I am also sad that opportunity might not exist for much longer. I miss the unreasonable optimism of my youth.

4. If you're looking for a postdoc and you're not looking outside of the US - what in the world are you thinking??? This is not a place to establish a stable science career at the moment.

This is pretty horrifying, especially as someone who was detained by a police officer for a couple of hours as a TEENAGER (21 years ago) because he thought my friend and I were terrorists because we were Indian and Chinese and had cameras. I shudder to think what would happen now.

Holy hell. DHS just openly stated that its agents use “reasonable suspicion” to make ARRESTS. This is blatantly unconstitutional. The Supreme Court is clear that you need probable cause to arrest someone, as opposed to stop them to ask them a question or two. This is huge b/c…

Thanks to all the folks that gave me advice along the way. I am so grateful to have such a robust and supportive mentoring network, especially during such wild and crazy times ❤️

But also, I am so so excited to join the group at UBC. Vancouver is one of my favorite cities, and UBC is home to so much talent and interesting science. I can't wait!

We bought our dream home! in the mountains! That sadly we will now have to leave.
Photograph of a sunrise over a backyard. A garden, lawn, and mountains are all visible, and the sun is framed by trees.

I am excited to be back in the PNW (or I suppose the PSW of Canada) but the decision comes with mixed emotions. VT has been a great home. I started some exciting collaborations, including transitioning to working with mosquitoes with help from @thevinaugerlab.bsky.social @lahonderelab.bsky.social

So what are the bottom lines?

First, a HUGE thank you to NIH staff (particularly grants management specialists but program officers and others as well) for getting this work done in a compressed period with many other stressors.

Ed Kravitz passed away yesterday.
He was a remarkable scientist and mentor- brilliant, curious, creative, and kind. I am grateful to have learned from him. His legacy will endure through his science and through the many people he inspired.

We will miss you, Ed.
