When Bari Weiss wrote about the national crisis of “woke private schools,” all of her sources were anonymous students, parents, and teachers who agreed with her premise—and she ran the story without getting a school on the record, for “context.”

These are the rebels: well-off Los Angeles parents who send their children to Harvard-Westlake, the most prestigious private school in the city. By normal American standards, they are quite wealthy. By the standards of Harvard-Westlake, they are average. The parents in the backyard say that for every one of them, there are many more, too afraid to speak up. "I've talked to at least five couples who say: I get it. I think the way you do. I just don't want the controversy right now," related one mother. They are all eager for their story to be told - but not a single one would let me use their name. They worry about losing their jobs or hurting their children if their opposition to this ideology were known. Consider this story, from Chapin, the tony all-girls school on the Upper East Side, involving a white girl in the lower grades who came home one day and told her father: "All people with lighter skin don't like people with darker skin and are mean to them." He was horrified as she explained that that was what she had been taught by her teachers. "I said to her: that's not how we feel in this family." It's worth taking a look at Chapin's various affinity groups, which have become de rigueur at all of these schools. (Chapin did not respond to a request for comment.)

ICE agents illegally break into a woman's bathroom in a NY nutrition bar manufacturing plant. "Pull up your pants," says a male agent. The agents only had a warrant to review employer documents. They didn't have a warrant to search for, detain, or arrest anyone there.

He was a busy, inquisitive child with a bright smile and a personality that drew people in. Known for his humor and playful spirit, Coby was a natural jokester and a fearless daredevil, always willing to try what others would not. Even when he fell, he would get back up laughing, undeterred and resilient. Coby loved to read, especially books about history, with a particular fascination for ancient times and the era of sword fighting. He had a thoughtful mind and enjoyed asking questions, especially about the Bible, often surprising adults with the depth of what he had absorbed simply by listening. One cherished childhood memory recalls a young Coby, no more than four or five years old, declaring in protest while being sent to clean his room, "I'm going to Candace's house, where my yoke is easy and my burdens are light," quoting scripture he had heard in church. Church played a central role in Coby's life. It was a place of excitement, learning, and belonging. Music came naturally to him, and he especially loved playing the drums, a gift he developed while growing up in church. He also played football and enjoyed being part of a team. Though his behavior was often misunderstood, those closest to him knew Coby to be deeply sensitive, protective of his family, forgiving by nature, and capable of loving fiercely and wholeheartedly. Coby faced challenges throughout his life, including mental health struggles that began in early childhood. Despite these challenges, he remained intelligent, expressive, and hopeful. He wanted more out of life, a job, a family, stability, and purpose. He longed to build a future and to be understood for who he truly was. Above all, Coby loved his family. He shared a close bond with his mother, Druesilla Brown, who understood him deeply and stood by him unwaveringly. When Coby laughed, he laughed freely. When he cried, he cried to his mother. And when he loved, he loved hard. Shacoby "Coby" Kenny leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Druesilla Brown; his sister, Caribbean Brown; his father, Julius Kenney Jr.; his siblings, Kasia Taylor, Jaron Kenney, Jordan Kenney, and Julius Kenney III; his maternal grandmother, Leola Jackson; his paternal grandmother, Shirley Hall; his paternal grandfather, Julius Kenney Sr.; his aunts, Geralyn Brown and Felicia Brown; and a host of cousins, extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Willie B. Brown, and his uncle, William "Bill" Walter Brown. Coby will be remembered for his laughter, his curiosity, his musical talent, his bold spirit, and the undeniable imprint he left on the hearts of those who truly knew him. THIS is what makes my head spin: The president is not a moral figure in any idiom, any land, any culture, any subculture. I'm not talking about the liberal enlightenment that would make him want the country to take care of the poor and sick. I mean he has no Republican values either. He has no honor among thieves, no cosa nostra loyalty, no Southern code against cheating or lying, none of the openness of New York, rectitude of Boston, expressiveness and kindness of California, no evangelical family values, no Protestant work ethic. No Catholic moral seriousness, no sense of contrition or gratitude. No Jewish moral and intellectual precision, sense of history. He doesn't care about the life of the mind OR the life of the senses. He is not mandarin, not committed to inquiry or justice, not hospitable. He is not proper. He is not a bon vivant who loves to eat, drink, laugh. There's nothing he would die for - not American values, obviously, but not the land of Russia or his wife or young son. He has some hollow success creeds from Norman Vincent Peale, but Peale was obsessed with fair-dealing and a Presbyterian pastor; Trump has no fairness or piety. He's not sentimental; no affection for dogs or babies. No love for mothers, "the common man"" veterans. He has no sense of military valor, and is openly a coward about war. He would have sorely lacked the pagan beauty and capacity to fight required in ancient Greece. He doesn't care about his wife or wives; he is a philanderer but he's not a romantic hero with great love for women and sex. He commands loyalty and labor from his children not because he loves them, even; he seems almost to hate them — and if one of them slipped it would be terrifying. He does no philanthropy. He doesn't - in a more secular key - even seem to have a sense of his enlightened self-interest enough to shake Angela Merkel's hand. Doesn't even affect a love for the arts, like most rich New Yorkers. He doesn't live and die by aesthetics and health practices like some fascists; he's very ugly and barely mammalian. Am I missing an obscure moral system to which he so much as nods? Also are there other people, living or dead, like him?
