As more of my valued colleagues face the threat of redundancy, here’s a quick reminder that it takes years and years of public investment to train an academic. Cutting someone with this wealth of experience loose isn’t “saving” anything. It is a massive waste of our collective resources.
UK Universities in Crisis? Time to Transform Higher Ed Finance
by Rob Hawkes and Scott Ferguson Universities in the UK are in crisis. Job cuts in the sector are reaching ‘cataclysmic’ levels, with an estimated 10,000 already lost and many more at risk. Just da…

As EHRC leaks a final draft Code of Practice to the Equality Act to the Times then delivers it to govt and attempts to wash its hands of the impact on trans people, its important to recognise and call out the shell game we're in. EHRC will say 'we're just following the Supreme Court judgement' 1/3
A picture of the shell game - three red - ish cups, with a hand lifting one to show a dice.

'The architecture of whiteness' by Rhianna Garrett

In this commentary, the author discusses the experience of using the word 'whiteness' in a viral X social media post celebrating their thesis submission.

Screenshot of a commentary abstract in Area by Rhianna Garrett (2025) entitled 'The architecture of whiteness' with a black banner at the top.

On 27 January 2025, I submitted my doctoral thesis titled ‘The architecture of whiteness: How institutional whiteness shapes academic careers in the UK’, and shared this milestone on X (formally Twitter). However, given the far-right political landscape of the platform, the post became a representative for the very thing I was hoping to challenge—the normalcy of whiteness. In this paper, I define the architecture of whiteness as the metaphorical notion that whiteness is a structure feature of the UK university space—both physically and metaphorically—and focuses institutional investigations on ‘race’ and racism on spatial features that have been built into the walls of the academy. I argue that now more than ever, whiteness must be articulated as more than a phenotype, more than an imagination, more than a system, but as an architecture, particularly in the context of university organisations built by bricks of whiteness.

Governments must respond quickly and sympathetically if a child or their parents apply to live together in the same country.
If a child’s parents live apart in different countries, the child has the right to visit and keep in contact with both of them.

The panel “What Is Critical Geography, and What Can, and Must, It Be?” yesterday was so necessary to think about the futures we aspire to have - whilst having to address all sorts of emergencies now. Thank you @sklosterkamp.bsky.social for convening! #RGSIBG25

The EHRC don't want your views; TransActual are challenging Government Ministers to do better!

We had no faith that the EHRC would conduct this consultation professionally, fairly or transparently. We asked individuals and organisations to send us copies of their consultation responses.

At paragraph 69 of its new schools guidance, the UK government mandates that from 2026 children must be taught that trans people are not recognised at law in their acquired sex. This is indoctrination into accepting a practice which is definitively a human rights abuse.

This is *excellent*. Would highly recommend for anyone who is trying to get up to speed on the EHRC situation / getting their heads round the technicalities of the legal issues at stake.

Briliant article. Very clear in its scathing appraisal of Faulkner & the culture war campaign group which the EHRC has become.

Sounds absurd to assert that a person's desire to know what my genitals are is more important than my desire to keep my genitals private but here we are.

This is born out by Falkner's claim during questions by the Women's and Equalities Committee that Article 8 - the right to privacy - does not apply to us.

In future, when GCs say 'what rights don't you have?', we will be able to say 'the right to privacy' apparently.

We are not real people to them. It is therefore axiomatic in their eyes that not only do we not have rights, no argument that we should have rights can possibly be valid.
