re: roblox dude's interview crashout. the thing he wants to say but can't is "at scale, kids are gonna get hurt. that is the price for scale." the thing nobody wants to say out loud is "maybe scaling to a level where harm isn't manageable is bad, and scale should be contained"

Part of this week’s newsletter was inspired by the post below. Was there a way to show the distance between normal Americans and the super wealthy?

I’ve apparently turned “would rather lick/suck the syrup off the hair on the back of my hand than get up from my post-breakfast reading perch on the porch to wash it” years old.

The thing to understand about fascism is that most people you know will be bought off. Bought with promises of peace and stability, bought with business opportunities or paid with actual cash. Most people aren't going to resist. Get used to it and get used to operating in that environment.

It’s cool that Alexa has a new voice that is 30% more natural sounding and the only downside is she’s 70% slower and shittier at performing the basic tasks I need her to perform!

I think the fundamental conflict in America is still that the broad left has cultural power but wants that to translate to political power and the right has political power and wants that to translate to cultural power.

It's fascinating and revealing how many centrists think refusing to compromise on human rights to gain the support of bigots represents a "political purity test," yet also think that a bigot saying "I won't join you unless you accommodate my bigotry" does NOT represent a "political purity test."

Honestly hilarious that Ezra Klein’s position in his conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates is essentially “the GOP has had huge political success by becoming a radical far-right extremist party that is hurting all the causes I believe in and the only way we can win again is by becoming more moderate.”

What’s more astonishing: 1) that the president clearly believes, and repeatedly suggests, that asylum seekers are people from mental asylums, or 2) that no journalist has ever challenged him on this and no mainstream media outlets have done any deep dives on this story?

The debate around what is or isn’t “cancel culture” really just obscures a simple truth that it’s BAD to be massively racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic and it’s GOOD to speak out against injustice. Some things are good and some things are bad and it’s okay to say which you think are which.

Are we all ready to admit, once and for all, that the culture wars over "free speech" this last decade or so have been entirely about the *content* of the contested speech, not procedural commitments to speech as such?

I can’t seem to find the scathing Bari Weiss pieces on the cancellation of @matthewjdowd.bsky.social @karenattiah.bsky.social or @jimmykimmel.com…can anyone point me toward them please?

Absolutely boggles the mind that the free speech people would expect me to say something different about Charlie Kirk the day after he died than I would have the day before he was killed by a brainrot edgelord—which is, fuck Charlie Kirk and all other racist, misogynist, fascist garbage people.
September 15, 2025 at 8:55 PM
There’ve been more cancellations of people quoting Charlie Kirk accurately and denouncing political inaction on gun violence in the last week than there were cumulatively throughout the entire multi-year, reactionary centrist cancel culture panic.

This is simply untenable. There is no way forward with media and political classes captured by the right. Every time someone commits a crime you have to pray it's not an undesirable or it's purge time, then when it turns out to be themselves again they just shrug and wait for the next one.

Can’t be said enough different ways that there is a huge difference between celebrating someone death and merely saying “wow, that guy who died was a world historical piece of shit and I feel no sadness whatsoever about him being gone from this mortal coil.”

Charlie Kirk was a man so deeply committed to freedom of speech and enlightened, reasonable debate that you are not allowed to quote anything he said ever again.
