If anyone’s interested, I’m presenting online tomorrow on how the supporters of the Weimar and First Austrian Republics crafted their own form of nationalism to defend democracy in the interwar period. 7 PM UK time, 1 PM Central Time.

This lurid headline is about British tourists no longer getting away with overstaying in Schengen. Or being 'illegals', as it's often called in the UK.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

I say this with the bluntness it requires: they will get people murdered if this continues. This is not just populism anymore either: it’s completely unhinged and a deliberate choice that does endanger lives. I am not saying this lightly at all.

In a bold move, Robert Jenrick is set to unveil a controversial plan targeting what he calls 'activist' judges, at the Conservative Party conference.

So a book I need to see — Albert Schouteet, De klerken van de Vierschaar te Brugge met inventaris van hun protocollen (Brugge, 1973) — seems only to exist in a couple of libraries in Belgium and the Netherlands. If it's near you and you could take some pictures, I'll happily pay for your time!

Today is German Unity Day, celebrating reunification of East & West. In 1992, Audre Lorde co-wrote a letter to Chancellor Helmut Kohl, decrying how unification is used to reinforce the ideal of "Germany for Germans," producing racist violence. Apt today, with police cadets chanting "Ausländer raus!"

Stadtler was granted a personal audience with Hitler on 12 July. However, instead of fighting the owners’ corner in the meeting, Stadtler agreed with the Nazi leader to ‘eliminate the influence of the owners in terms of staff and capital’.

On 1 July 1933, the Ullstein company, Germany's biggest liberal publishing house at the time, hired Eduard Stadtler, a member of the NSDAP parliamentary group, for the new position of ‘political director’ to negotiate with the new Hitler-led government.

Bari Weiss is set to be named the editor in chief of CBS News, the New York Post reports
Paramount Skydance is poised to name Bari Weiss as editor in chief of CBS News in the coming days — giving the hard-charging journalist unusual clout to revamp the struggling network as it also acquires her scrappy news site the Free Press, The Post has learned.

Weiss — a 41-year-old former New York Times opinion writer who has built the Free Press into a buzzworthy site with a contrarian bent — is expected to be named to the top post in a Monday announcement, although the talks are in flux and the timing could change, a source close to the situation said.

The other depressing point is that the only "American" thing Bill Burr can think of – what makes foreigners "just like him" – are soulless chain restaurants. Values that used to be claimed as "American" – liberty, equality – don't seem to play a role anymore for contemporary Americans.

Bill Burr unironically whitewashing for the Saudi royals.
Amid rising backlash from fellow comedians and human rights advocates, Bill Burr is defending his appearance at the Riyadh Comedy Festival, calling it “one of the top three experiences I’ve had” and “mind blowing.”

“It was great to experience that part of the world and to be a part of the first comedy festival over there in Saudi Arabia,” Burr said on the Sept. 29 episode of his “Monday Morning Podcast.” “The royals loved the show. Everyone was happy. The people that were doing the festival were thrilled.” During the episode, Burr talks about arriving in Riyadh with apprehension due to the years of negative portrayals in Western media. “You think everybody’s going to be screaming ‘Death to America’ and they’re going to have like fucking machetes and want to chop my head off,” Burr said. “Because this is what I’ve been fed about that part of the world.” His biggest surprise, came from the restaurants available and from the audience itself, which he described as young, diverse and eager to engage with stand-up comedy.

“Is that a Starbucks next to a Pizza Hut next to a Burger King next to a McDonald’s? They got a fucking Chili’s over here!”

He continued: “I had to stop a couple times during the show and say, ‘I’ll be honest with you guys, I cannot fucking believe any of you have any idea who I am,’” Burr said. “It was just this great exchange of energy. They know their reputation. So they were extra friendly.”
