there's a certain way certain people write fiction about disability that really sets my teeth on edge, and it's an approach that I can only describe as 'educational hugboxing'

in this, portrayal of disability must be constantly affirming, and it must use specific and correct terminology

Not all disabilities are visible & if some people are gaming the system it’s still worth the cost of tolerating it if it ensures that the system remains in tact.

If you’re worried about reducing the number of people who game the system a perfect way to do that is to regulate your god damn self.

So I am going to say something about romance as a genre.

A lot of people think that romance is ignorable because <insert thing they think about romance> and romance authors don't count because <insert thing they think about romance>.

This thread is not about whether you have to like romance.

hi, cis folks!

this week, with some democrat votes, 2 anti-trans bills passed the house. one bans medicaid funds for trans youth care, the other proposes jail time for providers.

they haven't passed the senate, but dems may need convincing to vote no on both.

tap into the 🧵for a quick action.
a sequel:

cis people on the skyline are genuinely more distressed by the trump-kennedy center than the fact that congress said a second time in 2 days, “no, really this kind of child’s healthcare should be banned & criminalized” & 46/47 non-GOP senators won’t commit to “i will oppose this.”

That's a key reason why ML research projects like the one I used to work on before the bubble even lit off specifically attempted to build a visual, white box UX to center domain specialists to validate & tune the predictive results from relatively-focused, highly-curated dataset-based ML models. /1
suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

Hi, I'm a scholar (MTheol) specialized in censorship. Give feedback NOW.

You can't enforce this w/o automated censorship AND forcing self-censorship. Both are bad! These rules are always bent to harm queer ppl and sex workers.

Who does this pre-censorship serve, other than puritans and fascists?

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

By a vote of 76-23, S 1071 passes the motion to proceed to the motion to concur. Won't know who voted for this until the roll call is uploaded, but safe to say it passed with the support of at least 24 members of the Democratic caucus. (Rand Paul probably voted nay and Steve Daines has been absent).

Do economists have a measure of stability/security?

It seems to me that wages have gone up, but the things that made life feel secure have been chipped away at.

Off the top of my head - home ownership, job security, industry stability, healthcare accessibility, and the social safety net.
Americans in their 20s and 30s may not feel that they’re richer than their equivalents 60 years ago, but they’re objectively wrong.

It’s fascinating how important it is to some people not to say “I’m struggling, it’s hard” or “I need help”—objectively true—but to instead insist they have it worse.

Making art gives you power. Writing gives you power. Literacy gives you power.

Fascists HATE when you have power because you can fight them with it.

They also hate when an avenue of power is out of reach to them, re: art (of all mediums). They can't make art bc it takes vulnerability to make it--

Today, members of the House will vote on a dangerous bill that will expand government censorship under the guise of protecting youth online.

Tell your representative to protect the First Amendment and vote NO.
Censorship Does Not Keep Kids Safe
KOSA is an alarming bill that would enable censorship and violate young people’s First Amendment right to freely access information. We must call on Congress to act now and protect free speech online.
