YES this is what I keep harping on! there's SO MANY cool and interesting uses of every other type of Machine Learning model, but frickin Generative AI has swallowed up the funding AND ruined the brand

I do wonder that part of the solution has to be a massive increase in state school funding? why are kids killing themselves with 40 extra curriculars to have a resume to get limited spots in “good” universities when we could have good local colleges available to everyone? it’s bananas
it is devastating to be bearing witness to this as an educator. as the thread mentions, the causes are likely manifold - LLMs, post-covid brain damage, teaching to the test, transactional HS teaching, students under increased pressure, attention span degradation. but it's devastating in combination.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.
