Some SF hack. Not your NPC. Trans rights are human rights, now and always.
Two of the best books I've ever read never got published.
Readers loving Shesheshen and Homily has filled my life with brightness.

But the truth is, a lot of really honkin' good books never get published. Wrong day, wrong editor, wrong mood, wrong breakfast. The lack of virtue in the system is why it's so important to lift up writers who touch your soul.
I mean, it helps that it’s really fuckin’ good.

Theft is theft, even when it’s laundered. GenAI is laundering stolen labor.

I genuinely feel like I’m going insane with organizations that should be against plagiarism excusing plagiarism with LLMs. It’s plagiarism!! What more do you need to hear? Do you accept plagiarized entries? No? Ok then!

GenAI cannot summarise anything because it cannot analyse anything because there is no intelligence there. This entire premise starts with a lie and the deceit builds from there.
The “AI” has not read the book. Even if the book was in its training data, it has just absorbed it as a set of statistics. It will juggle you a “summary” that might or might not relate to the conclusions of the actual text. The only way you’ll know is to read it yourself.
This is one of the reasons I remain horrified by seeing @historians.org suggest "ways to use gAI" that included this:

These people have been told that the chatbox is an everything machine. The way out can't be to provide a better everything machine because that can't exist.
Because hundreds of millions of people are already using these tools and finding utility in them. And they're not crazy, they are reasonable. Telling them, "no, you have to do without", will make them think, "Oh, I guess the critics are crazy and the AI bros are the reasonable ones."

I mean, the thing is, and I keep telling people this, I am SUPER lazy, so why would I learn how to prompt "AI" to write in a non-"AI" way when I can just naturally write in an engaging, human style? I doubt there is ever going to be a point where adding "AI" to the mix isn't just extra work for me.
I just saw a great take on writers using "AI" - people don't like to read something that's clearly written by "AI", so we need to respect that and make sure it seems natural.

So...put as much effort into tricking people into thinking we made an effort as we would into actually writing. Outstanding.

That’s what these ‘debates’ are really about: framing old fashioned oppression as some kind of high-brow concern for women’s happiness.

You know what makes us happy? Bank accounts. Voting rights. The ability to leave a bad marriage and not have a miscarriage kill us.

None of this is “good faith political debate,” and it’s not a coincidence that all these outlets are suddenly interested in the same “discussion” at the same time.

Treating women’s humanity like a thought exercise makes it that much easier to legislate away

Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.

They think writers can be replaced because they don't understand what writing is effective, yes, but don't discount the desire to cut human labor out of the process entirely, not just for "cost savings" but because the management class and especially the investor class just fucking hate humans.
Is that why people think that ChatGPT and other AI(?) could replace authors - the people in management can't recognize good writing and so assume that no one else can, either? It seems like that would quickly be dismissed witjh any sort of beta readership, but.

You know what? To hell with being circumspect.

@sfwa.org is saying it’s perfectly fine to use the plagiarism machine *”trained” on work stolen from its dues-paying members* to qualify for a Nebula, and that it in fact encourages doing so.

This is utterly shameful.

There comes a point where professionals in an industry ought to ask if an industry award is worthy of the prestige attached to it. Especially if the organisation handing out the award is consistently doing Some Bullshit.

I agree with this 👇

Any LLM use should be disqualifying. It tarnishes the awards as a whole to allow for 'some' disclosed use.
I'm very disappointed in SFWA's soft stance on LLM and the Nebulas. Any use of LLM, disclosed or not, should not be awards eligible. It's plagiarism and crap, period

Is this a joke?
Another Nebula Awards nomination cycle is in full swing, and the addition of poetry and comics, along with the presence of LLMs in industry, required careful consideration.

Read on, and vote well!

We trust our voters & look forward to what they choose to celebrate.

Some savvy broadcaster out there should do counterprogramming about the actual state of feminism, what is working, what needs improvement, with a diverse panel of smart women. It would be awesome. Anyway. I’m around.

If ICE gets to decide against all evidence that your documentation is fake, just because they say so, then there is no law. For anyone, but especially for Black and brown people the Supreme Court has declared are warrantless arrest targets.
Dulce Consuelo Diaz Morales was born in Maryland. She has a valid U.S. birth certificate, medical and immunization records, and sworn affidavits.

Yet, ICE claims her documents are “not authentic” and has held her in immigration detention for days.

Another dev shared this with me in reference to how senior leaders in tech seem to exist in a different world to engineers when it comes to discussing AI.

Fear of reporting up bad news, rewarding dishonest over-optimism, has created this trend for decades.

There's a word for that:

Just so I’ve been 100% clear on this recently, and not just through reposting people saying things better than I think I’d be able to: the attack on trans rights—especially on trans healthcare—is hate. It’s not science. It’s not "protecting" kids. It’s 100% fucking hate, and it’s wrong.
