The Trump administration has made me a flagrant moralist in a way that has led me to tossing aside years of snark, and you know, I'm good with that. It's time to talk about what being a good person means; about why it's good to signal virtue, why it's good to press for values, not spectacle.
we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.

I wonder how long it'll be before SCOTUS decides to tear down all vaccine requirements by mandating bullshit religious exemptions. Part of their overarching goal of destroying public school in part by making it unsafe for middle class parents to send their kids to
The Supreme Court asks Trump's Justice Department to weigh in on a pending challenge to New York's COVID vaccine mandate for health care workers, which lacks any exception for religious objections. Suggests that some justices are looking at this one closely. www.scotusblog.com/cases/case-f...

Incredibly galling to hear Sauer talk about how the president is accountable to the public through elections, when the president he's referring to is one who attempted to illegally overturn an election he lost

Sauer saying something is unconstitutional because it "would be unconstitutional under Justice Scalia's dissent" is a remarkably cogent statement of the Roberts Court's approach to precedent.

The presidency, which isn't even directly elected (and need not be elected with any popular vote at all), and even when it's not trying to steal elections, is not the one true embodiment of the will of the people. The only people the Constitution vests a direct democratic mandate in are in Congress.

The administrative state was built by people dealing with real societal problems and governing constraints.
Hard to overstate how much of our future democracy is going to be driven by the intellectual parlor games musings by Justices that happen to align with their financial and political sponsors.

the whole structure of this argument — independent agencies are politically unaccountable therefore the president must have removal power — treats congress as if it were a total nullity, or as if only the president truly represents the public.

does democratic leadership outside of Warren and (maybe) Bernie have the vocabulary to actually challenge and contest what is happening before our eyes, ie the establishment of state affiliated media control
Jared Kushner's involvement was "not mentioned in Paramount's press release on Monday morning about its $108 billion bid, nor were participating sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Qatar."

fancy that
Jared Kushner is part of Paramount's hostile bid for Warner Bros. Discovery
Paramount is telling WBD shareholders that it has a smoother path to regulatory approval than does Netflix.

I thought the research was interesting, even if the conclusions it came to were unsurprising. What bugs me is that it's so busy trying to wring Meaning out of the information that it never gets around to pointing out that you can just buy the concentrate yourself and add your own water

Her baby was in the NICU. She was in ICE detention.
Before Trump took office, postpartum immigrants were rarely detained by ICE. Nayra Guzmán was detained while her 15-day-old baby was in the NICU.

People want crosswalks, safe streets, to be able to get around without a car AND stay alive, keep family safe ALL AT THE SAME TIME

it’s become beyond parody to watch the gymnastics that LA City will do to withhold mandated & voted for safety upgrades, even now arresting ppl for painting crosswalks
Jonathan Hale was arrested by LAPD today for painting a crosswalk, even as the city of Los Angeles funnels more money to LAPD and does gymnastics to avoid implementing HLA.

@mayor.lacity.gov, Jonny has made repeated attempts to meet with your office and has been iced out. Angelenos deserve better.

I was thinking about the amazing undergrad science being done at Winona. They have a dinosaur in a rock maybe still with skin! A public branch university creating opportunities for students.
The news from Oklahoma and Nebraska is so depressing. The US public university system is one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century, created to democratize liberal arts education, and it's being destroyed by greedy people who think only the rich are deserving of such learning.
