I’m watching the Lilith Fair documentary on Hulu and Sarah McLachlan was explaining the “fair” part of the festival name and she said it was a play on wards, that “fair” could mean “equal”, “attractive”, or “a celebration”.

In the late #90s, I perceived Lilith Fair as a very white female, acoustic, granola-y music festival…a perception not contradicted by the larger culture. I legit didn’t know the lineup included Black artists (Tracy Chapman, Queen Latifah, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott and more) until the #documentary.
