When decimalisation occurred in 1966, the Australian government compiled an 81 page file on dangers of using decimal coins in Christmas puddings. There was a media campaign warning people not to use the new coins in their cooking. The file is now digitised.

This Christmas, peace won’t come from the politics of envy. It will come only by building a more equal Australia | Brad Chilcott
Wealth is shifting upwards, basic universal services are outsourced and improving the lives of the Australians doing it toughest is being ignored. So where can we find hope? The Christian scripture “Peace on Earth and goodwill to all” is not only the hope of those who celebrate Christmas, it’s also both the weary longing of those who don’t profit from the war, violence and division that has characterised recent local and global history, and the go-to solution for political and community leaders looking for solutions. In practice, however, “goodwill to those like us and ‘please stay peaceful’ to those who aren’t” may be a more accurate characterisation of our collective experience as wealth shifts inexorably upwards, basic universal services are outsourced – disability support, early education, aged and health care – shifting shareholders into the role of primary beneficiaries, and the corporatisation of not-for-profits has social services providers placing increased market share higher on their priority list than improving the lives of the Australians doing it toughest. Australia's main electricity grid, the NEM, will soon have 40GW/113GWh of storage (not including Snowy2.0).

That's enough storage to power the grid for about 4.5hrs at average demand of ~25GW

When I talk to people in the industry, they agree. 80% is the over/under with current tech. Arguing about '100%' is driven by narrative, an ideal to be asymptotically approached, not policy & strategy. '100% at national scale is impossible' is a straw man.
The real story isn’t “renewables are cheaper” — we already knew that. An 82% renewable grid breaks marginal pricing. Once wind, solar + batteries dominate, fossil generators stop setting peak prices. Scarcity rents collapse. Volatility dies.
That’s the system shock incumbents fear — not ideology. ⚡🔋
Electricity generation costs would be a third lower with 82% renewable grid, CSIRO says
Modelling suggests main electricity market could run almost entirely on renewables without increase in generation cost by 2050

Important analysis here from Ember. Compare dispatchable solar at $76/MWh (given these assumptions) to the most recent LCOE numbers from Lazard. At these price points, it's game over for thermal generation. (NB: combined cycle gas isn't particularly dispatchable)
