January 1 might ring in a new year, but it's also a day when copyright protections expire for a bunch of cool old stuff that we can now freely access, republish, reinterpret, and revitalize.

"The Little Engine That Could," a Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel collaboration, and many other works are now free to use and reuse.

As I told @kattenbarge.bsky.social (who has been doing absolutely incredible reporting on image-based abuse for years) last June, "X is going to continue to be one of the worst offenders and probably one of the pioneers of horrible ways to hurt women.” spitfirenews.com/p/grok-tribu...

Sitting a stewing in frustration isn't nearly as cathartic as just designing a poster. Let's see how often I remember that in 2026.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Korbessa never met a guinea fowl she didn't want to chase. A throwback to her neonate days – ears flared, trunk raised, charging with wholehearted determination.

May we all carry such enthusiasm into 2026.

Happy New Year from all of us at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

this is a great article
I wrote much less this year than I've written in the past five, so there's not a whole lot to revisit. This piece, though, I still think is probably the best article I've ever written, even if it was a dumb professional move to write it [free to read] www.patreon.com/posts/empero...

It's kind of telling watching folks try to analyse the police misconduct in the United Healthcare case because, like, you know they do that anyway, right? Cops routinely fabricate evidence even when they genuinely believe they've got the right guy because it's easier than doing their jobs.

When "confused" Trump supporters say "I thought he was just gonna deport the criminals" you need to remember we arent talking about criminals as a legal term. We are talking about criminals as a *social* classification.

Here's a really easy New Year's Resolution:
If you're sick with something contagious, you will stay home if your circumstances allow.

If you can't stay home, you will mask around others until there is no possibility you are contagious.

By making these choices, you will literally save lives.
