This from @robertshrimsley.bsky.social made me laugh

“ In his robust defence of Brexit freedoms, Starmer resembles Alec Guinness’s half-mad colonel in The Bridge on the River Kwai, protecting an edifice he has forgotten was built for the benefit of the other side.”

A Brexit survival strategy that shows Starmer’s days are numbered
Labour will need a different leader if it pursues a policy of rejoining the EU customs union or single market

And cut out the 'flunami', 'super flu', 'worst case scenario' rhetoric (looking at you, NHS England, for the latter two).

It's not helpful. At all.

I contrast to Labour’s advice, the Mayor of New York has no problems given the correct mask advice for flu/covid.
H/T Gina on x

This is the health advice in New York on our current situation. The Public are being advised to wear an N95/ffp2 respirator. This is the correct advice. The disparity between this advice which is correct for airborne transmission and UKHSA saying wear an FRSM is huge.

And of course healthy people who want to stay healthy.
Masking isn’t about ideology. It’s about:

😷 immunocompromised children at school & their families not risking their health & lives
😷 people with Long Covid trying not to be reinfected
😷 disabled people protecting their protective system

That’s the stakes. /8

As the health and safety specialist in CATA (Covid Airborne Transmission Alliance - a core participant in the Covid Inquiry), I am very involved with healthcare H&S scandals.

In particular the betrayal of healthcare workers by HM Gov’t during COVID.

May I offer a few thoughts…

Current flu test count (Influenza A) still suggest that this wave is more on the early side than the high side.

Don't doubt that H3N2 can make people very ill, but the "worst for decades" and "tidal wave" headlines do seem to be playing it up a bit.

If C-19 is airborne in schools, why does Health Minister, Director of IPC or CMOs not recognise this in healthcare where concentration of infections is greatest? IPC guidance still says FRSM for routine care.

Here in Ireland the flu has arrived 3-4 weeks earlier than normal and it is hitting hard. Lots of hospitals overwhelmed, and plenty of anecdotes of schools with 20-50% of students absent through illness last week. Children are being quite badly affected.
