The world may seem full of pain and anguish, but there is good and hope as well. These things must be fought for. Do not despair, for even the smallest acts of honor are a light in the darkness. Join me as we bring these flames together, and watch as even the deepest shadows are pushed back.

I'm not asking you to read our books (but I think they're awesome) or respect how we write (but you don't need to tell me to my face that you have bad taste), but I am asking you to think about us as colleagues who are going to get hit by the shit first, and to give a fuck when it happens to us.

The news about Harlequin translators getting fired en masse?

You should care about that. They're doing it there because they think nobody gives a shit about romance and so it's fine to experiment with it first.

There is a thing that can happen to praying mantises, called "Peter Pan syndrome" by keepers, where they keep eating, keep apparently thriving, but stop molting while still sub-adult. This inevitably kills them, as they crush themselves inside their old exoskeletons. It sucks.

We have to choose good every day. We have to choose acceptance and equality and equity and justice. None of us are inherently beyond that. And the first step to doing good is recognising that you aren’t better than anyone else.

National Democrats didn’t see that as an emergency at the time, and now they cannot hold the presidency because of it.

This is a fantastic story.
My mother asked dad to put in one of those doohickeys to open spaghetti suace jars; she expected a metal plate that screwed to the underside of the cupboard, had a "V" shaped enclosure, you slide the jar in until the lid sticks and twist.

If you’re celebrating, may it be joyful. If you’re gritting your teeth and getting through it, may it pass uneventfully. If you are alone, I am with you in thought.

And it seems a difficult prospect, but I wish us all peace and kindness at the close of the year.

The point of writing crap is not that you should barf out anything.

It's that you should be aware as you are writing it what the flaws are, and you need to get through it the first time, because the act of doing so informs you what is wrong.

The lessons for heavy DIYers to take from this, btw:

If your doctor says your insurance won't approve a newly-released drug you really want to try, don't despair. Ask them if they're willing to do a "peer to peer" if you draft the justification for them to edit to save time.

They reveal how temperatures inside churches have changed over time due to climate change and increased heating.
