Kinda hard to talk about these apps
w/o knowing The Before Times.

We used to use BofA’s gdawful interface (designed for accountants) + arts & crafts (taping receipts to paper + scanning)—a horrible experience. Concur was light years ahead of this, although agree it needs a workflow overhaul.
unfortunately, I'm also currently using SAP Concur to do my expenses for november, which is one of the worst pieces of software ever devised in the history of mankind holy fuck

It’s finished.

It’s also not finished because, in the words of Paul Valéry, a piece of writing is never finished. Ultimately it is abandoned. That’s because writing is thinking, and we’re never finished with that.

Anyway, I figured out what to do with that long blog post . . .

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

When I was little, they must have just introduced M.Y. because they had a guy in a gorilla suit handing out mellow yellow frisbees at the grocery store. I was like 5. The frisbee was cool. Mom wouldn’t buy the soda.
Mello Yellow. The soda that asks “What if Mountain Dew was even worse?”

So true. I learned Spanish, and Englishbsuddenly made sense.
Really is a sick joke that learning a second language is the best way to learn English grammar.

Introduce yourself with 5 animals you’ve seen in the wild:

Anaconda (crossing the road in Mexico, stopping traffic)
Moose
Tiger shark
Frogfish
Peacock

The fish list could get very, very long because I’ve been diving since I was 14.
Armadillo
Owl
Deer
Coyote
Tarantula

Bonus deadly venomous critters: cottonmouth, copperhead, black widow

I had no idea that growing up playing those “find 10 things wrong with this picture” games in kids’ magazines would leave me with such maladaptive skills later in life 🫠

From the NRC's 2006 report on the dismal state of forensic evidence.

It's been ~20 years, and AFAICT, law schools have generally take ~0 step to adapt to ANY way to the increasingly big role ANY sort of data-based analysis plays in the legal system.

Just whistling past the stats graveyard.

Side note: my 9th grade history teacher was an expert in the JFK assassination. One day the other grades had a standardized test and he got to give this presentation.

He looked kind of like Geraldo Rivera.
JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone.
My first political memory - exactly 62 years ago right now, a 4-year-old boy trying to understand his mom's tears - is still the biggest event in my lifetime. We still (IMO) don't *really* know who killed JFK, but we know the public's trust was shattered. It's a straight line to today's mess

Trump (smiles, pats Mamdani's arm): "That's OK, you can just say yes. It's easier. I don't mind."

I'm awfully pessimistic about the Roberts Court, so I think they could find some way to let Texas keep its gerrymander—for example, have to let it go ahead while it's litigated—but I bet approving TX's while striking down CA's is too much, even for them. Well, maybe not Alito, but for a majority.
