"To hold in my hand a device that holds such storage. To know that owning a Haircut 100 back catalogue on such a scale was my choice. To know that the tiny pressure on my thumb, enough to move the click wheel, would change the song. Yes! I would do it! That power would set me up above the gods!"

Will Arnett was on Conan and told a story about how Conan dealt with the death of his parents by accusing Jason Bateman of killing them. It’s so funny.

what the FUCK

I watched it to the end and so I know literally what happened but I still do not know what is happening here
I can’t emphasize enough how much you need to watch this until the end

I wanted dinner recommendations so I scraped 13,000+ London restaurants and accidentally discovered Google Maps is running a shadow economy. Anyway here's a dashboard and a political economy thesis: open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...
How Google Maps quietly allocates survival across London’s restaurants - and how I built a dashboard to see through it
I wanted a dinner recommendation and got a research agenda instead. Using 13000+ restaurants, I rebuild its ratings with machine learning and map how algorithmic visibility actually distributes power.

I'm a late convert to test cricket but now absolutely love it.

I think it's one of the very few things in life comparable to a novel - with different acts, a specific setting, character arcs that rise and fall, the beginning may end up being nothing like the end

Spotify Wrapped Day is the time of the festive season that has something for everyone. Those who celebrate can show how impeccably curated their tastes are, those who don't celebrate can luxuriate in the self-righteousness of boycotting Spotify. It's a beautiful, inclusive thing.

Received an email from a colleague, thought it was weird they had that strange ç in their name. Turned out there was a smudge on my screen and I didn't realise so I've been using it in emails to them for the past 2 year.

More and more places like zoos, museums, etc., seem to offer annual passes for a minimal top-up on the cost of a single visit. I would not be surprised to see soft subscription models like this move into other parts of the leisure industry
Fundamentally - the idea that my family going bowling and then to a chain restaurant at a leisure park is going to cost £150 plus transport does still feel nuts.
