This is surreal. 4 Oglala Lakota men kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis have finally been located. One of them was released but the other 3 are being held at Fort Snelling, a former concentration camp used to imprison Native people incl. the Dakota 38 during Dakota Wars.

Creative solidarity means:

If you're a writer, do not use AI "art" or AI "voiceover"
If you're an artist, do not use AI "writing" or AI "references"
If you're a streamer/actor, do not use AI for backdrops, thumbnails, etc.

Never help AI steal another medium

No excuses, no shortcuts, no surrender.

1 year ago today, I went to early vote. A volunteer asked me if I wanted a sample ballot and I burst into tears. Then she tried to comfort me but also started crying. She said, "I know you're scared but this could be really exciting," and I said "But it could also be really terrible." And it was.

For a while I confused Courtney Cox and Heather Cox Richardson. I'm talking like... early days. Maybe 2017? Anyhow, my mom would talk about her and I'd think "Wow, she really pivoted."

These photos get more outrageous the more you look at them.

Tearing down the People's House for a $300M vanity project while federal workers go unpaid and America barrels towards a health care crisis.

A literal depiction of what Trump is doing to our country.

"What if, in the process of trying to ban AI products that quite actually encourage children to kill themselves, we wind up banning chatbots that help children cheat on their homework, diminish their propensity for critical thought, and lead to the development of other forms of AI psychosis?"
CA governor Gavin Newsom vetoed both of the major AI bills on his desk that Silicon Valley meaningfully opposed—one making it illegal for bosses to use AI to fire workers with no oversight, one requiring chatbot sellers to ensure their products do not harm children before marketing to them.
Silicon Valley's capture of our political institutions is all but complete
The tech lobby kills off two key California AI bills, and why it matters. Plus: How Sam Altman played Hollywood with Sora 2, organized mass social media deletions, and more.

Telling educators to keep an "open mind" about AI is like telling someone with an astronomical electric bill and heat stroke to "keep an open mind about climate change, it's not all bad, there's just a lot we don't know, we don't know how it will affect us. It could be a wonderful opportunity."

You can add up all the enjoyable pursuits of LLMs and the work productivity hacks and none of them, separately or together, will be more important than AI’s ecological costs or political disruption.

“We” is more important here.

My mom basically lives off of this and she proudly calls it "mush." Often features greens from the garden.
I don’t know why it took my AuDHD brain until today to learn this, but I can just make a hash out of onions and garlic and any random vegetables in my fridge and add some protein and that can be my breakfast

My brothers and I shared one phone and the idea was whoever was traveling the furthest from home got to take it.
Thinking about how my parents gave me the family Nokia brick in high school and said "we got a collective 45 minutes on this phone for the month; you better not use it for any reason."
A middle school I interact with is in a state with a school cellphone ban and y’all everybody in there is relieved. EVERYBODY. The kids, the teachers, the janitors. They are so relieved. Nobody is really uptight about it…except some parents.

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

Authoritarians love "Gen AI" because it
- Sounds confident even when factually wrong
- Broadly conforms to & reproduces their biases, off the shelf
- Lets them create bespoke realities (text, audio, moving & still image) which agree w/ their biases
- Degrades trust in knowledge/evidence/expertise…
