I think this is one of the underappreciated aspects of how fascism keeps itself going even when it's generally disapproved of. And it's why they work so hard to take over so many subcultures/fandoms.

Back when I was infiltrating early Nazi Telegram, I very quickly came to the conclusion that it is outright DANGEROUS to cultivate on-background relationships with Nazis as sources.
Because I encountered too many researchers who were clearly compromised as a result of that sort of contact.
