The only principles they care about are "fuck you i got mine," & whatever lets them physically & systemically degrade those they deem "other" while letting those they deem "like them" do whatever they want.

"Hypocrisy"— flouting norms they demand others adhere to— enacts/reifies their will to power

Want to get back at that prof who gave you an A- on an exam? Or maybe you don't think people of color or women should be professors?

Make up a story about antisemitism, plop it into an anonymous student evaluation, and watch as your prof's life is upturned faster than you can spell "fascism."
And the following language: "Student course evaluations that are collected on an anonymous basis at the end of each semester will be regularly reviewed to identify any reports of antisemitism, which will be promptly referred to OECR for appropriate action."

I don't want to sugarcoat anything but it bears acknowledging loudly that day in & day out, despite literally everything, scholars keep researching, writing, & publishing work that, in ways big & small, implicit & explicit, via its sheer existence, is a defiant F U to the current administration.

This footage is bone-chilling. An occupying army rolling down the streets, traveling in fatigues and military vehicles with mounted guns. Imagine your family was in this park and having to explain to your child why dozens of heavily armed men, some on horseback, rounded you up like a human fox hunt.

I just think that a newspaper should tell the truth instead of playing politics.
The abiding faith of many here that if only the NYT had the right headline wording, or called Trump a liar a few hundred more times, Things Would Be Different is always bizarre. The swing voting NYT reader who hasn't heard Trump is bad is an imaginary creature.

Is this not what happened, though?
Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

I think a lot about this credentialing question without good language for it (spoiler Dr. Cottom has the analysis + words). SES, race, gender expression, clothing/hair (the drag of class/geography) (It took me years to get the class/geography drag - now I can't unsee it.)
Because Black people know that there is no such thing as “identification” or “identifying yourself”. They aren’t saying Padilla didn’t identify himself as a U.S. Senator. They are saying that there is only one acceptable identity — credential — being white and, in these times, being pro-Trump.
