EdD, Middle school humanities teacher, & QSA club advisor, & trying to make the chaos functional. This is obviously a personal account & my opinions are my own.
Last week, my middle schooler spoke at a rally to fund education and I could not be prouder of her. She wrote the speech on her notes app and absolutely nailed the delivery. Anyway, here’s the text of it:

Nobody is “becoming” anything. Trans women are women and trans men are men and that’s not going to change even if you take away their medical transition (because transitioning doesn’t make them trans, they are born trans). I’m so tired of people opining who don’t even have the vocab for the convo.

More politicians need to be like Emily Randall, who sees this for exactly what it is.
They don’t believe they have a future because they are watching and listening to politicians who do not care if they survive.

This bill isn’t about keeping kids safe. It’s about criminalizing parents and doctors who are just trying to get their kids the lifesaving care they need.

Republicans are putting the lives of trans children at risk and getting in the way of families making personal decisions for their own children.

We should be HELPING these kids survive and thrive — but Republicans would prefer to use them as a political prop.

👇 Many Congress members are too old to have children exposed to lockdown drills and shootings. We must vote out anyone unwilling to value our children over our guns.
"Every lockdown drill is a confession of failure. Every barricaded classroom is an indictment. Every child taught to hide is proof that the adults in charge have surrendered."
What Are We Doing to Our Children?
We taught kids to read, write, and dream; then trained them to hide, barricade, and bleed quietly while adults chose guns, cowardice, and silence over their future.

I understand that a lot of folks have been misled by fear-mongering and powerful regressive voices but it’s still astonishing to me that so many have fallen for the idea that oppressively policing other people’s gender identity and expression could in any way be part of an enlightened future.

Be mindful of and gentle with the ways you use Newtown and Sandy Hook today and tomorrow. Those moms, dads, brothers, cousins, and loved ones are here, dealing a hurt most of us can never understand, over and over again.

Listen to them. Amplify their voices.

If people were really bothered about women's rights they would sort out the gender pay gap, give more focus to stopping domestic violence, sort out the court system, deal with systemic problems affecting women. But that's not what all this bigotry is about is it. 😔

"the federal funds stopped arriving, without explanation, in 2024" <--because that's how we do it now apparently.

the birthright clause was not just written to wipe dred scott off of the books, it was written to repudiate the *idea* behind dred scott, you might say the larger *ideological project* of dred scott. and the whole of section 1 of the 14th amendment is a constitutional statement of political equality

41% of acute care beds in Washington state are at Catholic hospitals. Banning care trans people need means removing access to care in many communities.

Transphobic rhetoric is so mainstream that people need reminders that trans people are human beings. My QSA trans kids are musicians, artists, athletes, actors, fierce friends, readers, scouts, and school leaders. They are kids and deserve so much better that America is giving them right now.

Home languages are a gift and being fluent in two or three languages is a huge asset in adulthood. Something to keep in mind when schools rush students towards English fluency at the expense of the home language.
Home languages are a superpower and should be respected and valued as such in our classrooms.

Encouraging students to continue to discuss, play, research, sing, read, and write in their home languages is important-and not just as a “bridge to English” for students at beginner STEP levels. #OntEd

NYT is asking the public to donate to education charities. Ok, sure. But individual donations can’t make up for the huge gap created by the loss of federal funding. Vote to restore funding education if you want an educated public.

We have an Afghan refugee family in our kid community and I am so stressed on their behalf.

I cannot imagine being a mom with AFAB kids and being thrust into this kind of uncertainty vis a vis deportation to fucking Taliban-run Afghanistan.

Jesus fucking Christ.
