A great example of how the @nytimes.com centers white Americans and Trump supporters in its anecdotal political coverage. You never see stories like this about Black Democrats whose cities are cracked in Republican gerrymandering to give them Republican elected officials.
They Wanted a Conservative State. They Might Get a Democratic Representative Instead.

The passage of Proposition 50, which redrew California’s congressional map, means that all of the state’s conservative north is likely to be represented by Democrats.

A key thing about corporate use of genAI is that it removes all the friction involved between the executives' weird fetish shit and inner thoughts, and public display

It does to corporations what alcohol does to a bigot.
using AI cuts corners on involving people who know better. negativity for christmas is an awful ad concept even if it was made by people - so a creative team would push back on the request. business people like AI doesn't argue, not understanding experts were protecting them from their own bad ideas
"The most terrible time of the year"

McDonald’s pulls AI-generated Christmas advert in the Netherlands. The advert, titled "the most terrible time of the year," depicts Christmas chaos, with Santa caught in a traffic jam and a present-laden cyclist slipping in the snow

Autistic woman “not qualified” to diagnose own personality, say experts
A woman who identifies with every element of the autistic experience based on a lifetime of living in her own brain and body is “not qualified” to say she’s actually autistic, experts have claimed. …

some good climate/energy news:

* 96% of new US power capacity was carbon-free in 2024 (56 gigawatts!)

* 2025 included the first month ever when 51% of power on the U.S. grid was carbon-free

* The golbal trend is overwhelming: The world is now investing more $ in clean energy than fossil fuels

What I increasingly suspect is that people's use of AI isn't robbing them of their ability to think independently. Maybe it's the other way around. People's desire to surrender thought and decision making to someone or something else is what has helped GAI tools to catch on. (3/3) #academicsky

The purposes of immigration jail are "supposed" to be 1) make sure ppl show up for court hearings; 2) protect public. It is not a criminal sentence. When govt arrests ppl who are not dangerous at court hearings, they prove it's about punishment. That's illegal. www.latimes.com/california/s...

Something I find really frustrating about extremely popular media people “just asking questions” or whatever is that sometimes they’re helping speak things into existence. Not this specific scenario necessarily, but it really does lay the groundwork for bad outcomes by normalizing it.
Joe Rogan and Shane Gillis on Nick Fuentes running for president one day.

Rogan: “He could probably win in a few years. Listen, he couldn’t have existed before, right? Ten, twenty years ago, couldn’t have existed. Now, super popular. What’s twenty years from now look like?”

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

At my last job I was outside eating with a mid-20s coworker as a plane passed overhead creating contrails. He noticed it and asked what it was. I said it was a plane and he was in disbelief. Apparently in his 20+ years of life he had never noticed a contrail before.
I began this story focused on the weird lies about Hurricane Helene but became very disturbed at how prevalent this pseudo-environmentalism is. The movement blocks real policy to curb climate catastrophes.
For @rollingstone.com I wrote about the mass national movement to ban chemtrails...which don't exist. The movement is one of the ways in which MAHA is taking over the country.

In this zero sum game of more service, not taxes, it becomes a rob Peter to pay Paul scenario.

Truth of the matter is we need to increase taxation of wealth and property to fund important social needs. We need to accept taxation as a social responsibility and obligation, not something to avoid.

Have you noticed? When someone points to our responsibility—individual and personal, or collective and societal—to end an abuse, the question asked next is very rarely about *how* to do it, but how to *prevent* us from doing it, for fear of doing it the wrong way.
