Don't say "Parking Requirements"
Instead use "Costly Parking Mandates"

The language we use evokes emotion and mental shortcuts; we like to create coherent stories. Framing the story of parking reform in a compelling way will help us succeed. 🧵/7
Framing The Story of Parking Reform
The language we use evokes emotion and mental short cuts; we like to create coherent stories.
Framing the story of parking reform in a compelling way will help us succeed.
Don't Say: Parking Requirements
The word “requirements” indicates something is required, implicitly that it is needed. It is also value-neutral.
Instead Use: Costly Parking Mandates
Remind people parking costs money and land to provide. And use the term “mandates” which implies a heavier hand.

🎉 Congratz Zurich! Paris has also taken a similar measure. I wonder when/if an American city will take a similar approach.
taras-grescoe.com
On Sunday, #Zürich residents voted 52.8% in favor of increasing parking fees for cars according to weight.

The owner of a BMW X2 (Diesel), which weighs 1,675 kilograms, will now pay equivalent of €717 Euros per year to park on a public street. (Before, about €321.)

Direct democracy!

Parking doesn't just ruin cities, it ruins video games, too!

You've heard the story - Sim City's creators wanted to model real cities but "there were way to many parking lots in the real world and [the] game was going to be really boring."

Join us Saturday to hear from a Sim City designer!
Simulating the Future: a webinar with Stone Librande · Zoom · Luma
In 2013, the SimCity team began working on an expansion pack for the game, called "Cities of Tomorrow". To do this, they needed to make predictions about…

There is a corkboard outside my office and I have just started decorating it, but you can see where my priorities are 😏

Two stickers on a cork board, one from The War on Cars podcast with black font on yellow like a traffic sign, and one with Donald Shoup pointing and saying, a la the old Uncle Sam posters, "I want YOU to join the Parking Reform Network" Three stickers on a corkboard: one says freeway fighters network, one says Know the West and High Country News, and the third is a rainbow infinity sign with the text "we can't all be neurotypical, Karen" from rainbowmamadesigns on Etsy

There's definitely been some improvements since then, but even today, more than a quarter of Houston's downtown core is still just parking!

Single-stair buildings can also easily fit on smaller, oddly shaped land parcels, making them an ideal typology for infill development, especially for those smaller parking lots 😎

An updated thread of diagrams,
comparing Single Egress Stair (SES) buildings
to Double-Loaded buildings (with two stairs and a hallway).

aka why SES buildings are better, and - in many aspects - safer than double loaded buildings.
Two diagrams showing a single stair 5 storey building, and a 2 stair 5 storey building, with the stair cores and hallways highlighted in yellow.

It’s been one of the great honors of my life to witness, report, and advise on this historic restoration of property rights that makes it legal to build cute main streets again.

New post about how bulk transit passes are incredibly affordable and pair nicely with new parking reform and TOD laws.

New tools in SB25-161 expand this program - let's use them!

Great article by Max Nardo & our very own James Flattum about the opportunities eliminating parking minimums pared with increased Neighborhood EcoPass update could provide for incurring @RideRTD ridership.

Good news in Redondo Beach: this week the city council heard an update on the Artesia & Aviation revitalization plans.

After hearing from staff how the city’s parking requirements would make redevelopment infeasible, council decided to move forward to eliminate parking requirements on the corridor!
