You’re absolutely right — you are Pagliacci. It would certainly be difficult for you to attend your own performance! I should not have given such paradoxical advice, and I apologize deeply for the error. There is no excuse for my failure.

Pushing back on the idea that the point is to feel smug.

It's to feel pride in the active stewardship of your neighborhood.

Minnesotans may have toxic traits. Some may even act smugly about doing this, which I don't condone.

But these kinda things are good acts of preparedness & community care. 💛
If you wanna be a good neighbor and get extra Minnesota Nice points*, it is a fantastic time to check the storm drains on your street to make sure they’re not clogged with leaves before The backed-up water freezes.

*Points not redeemable for anything, but the important thing is you can feel smug.

These women have completely transformed civic life in my community and continue to do amazing things like this over and over again.
Today was the period drop at Neighbors, Inc. I don’t even feel these photos do it justice. But you’re looking at $12,000 and 1,303 pounds of pads, tampons, incontinence pads, cups, and other assorted hygiene gear.

A guy I used to work with was a tenured psych/CS professor as well as on an elite amateur crew team.

He said "you're never going to make learning easier, just like you're never going to make rowing easier."

I think about that a lot.
When people learn with ChatGPT instead of following their own searches, they end up knowing less, caring less, and producing worse advice, even when the facts are the same.

Friction is an essential ingredient for learning! Convenience makes us shallow.

12% of US grocery spending is SNAP.

If you wanted to replace it completely with food banks run off donations, you'd need about one in ten grocery stores to become a food bank.

These things matter! These things matter a LOT, because they all help uphold the idea that the country does not belong to a strongman with unilateral imperial command & the power of life and death. They subordinate our President to the rule of law. They say he is a leader and a servant, not a lord!

Trump unilaterally bulldozing the East Wing *is the same phenomenon* as his admin murdering innocent fishermen without trial or kidnapping people off the streets through ICE - it *ALL* reflects a profound contempt for the mythos and rituals of American consensus identity and rule of law.

I do not think "America always sucked so who cares if the elected President is destroying civic property to replace it with shoddily built palatial compounds, that's not important compared to ICE seizures" is a winning message.

1: it's all the same phenomenon!
2: Americans care about America.

The Star Tribune building is 3 blocks from the park where the Minneapolis march started. And for a newspaper that now considers itself statewide, there were more than 70 events scheduled outside of the Twin Cities, throughout Minnesota.
100,000-150,000 people march through downtown Minneapolis but it doesn’t make the front page if the Star Tribune. Instead, the top left story is “Ooo e-bikes dangerous.” How many head injuries from car/pedestrian, car/bike and car/car crashes are a year? Do they get top billing?
