This is capitulation. It is not the "Department of War." If CNN concedes on this point, they'll concede on any point.

CNN is now using the Trump preferred “Department of War” name in its official statements

“Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family’s food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.”

A Rutgers professor has been forced to flee the country for his safety, after targeting by a far-right student group that was *checks notes* claiming they felt unsafe.

I'm horrified.
I'm angry.

This is true for students too. Yes there are many factors impacting student reading, but working 30+ hours a week to be able to afford college is definitely one of them.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

the fact that there's an energy source responsible for life on earth that will just keep stably emitting tons of energy for another five billion years and that the most powerful country in the world has an administration that wants to wholly reject harnessing it is crazy

The secret is that almost all American Catholics, so almost all the rightCaths, including even the integralists, have an essentially Protestant understanding of religion as a category. Ironically, they cannot submit to the authority of the Church *in the name of the authority of the Church*.

Also introducing bias should produce variance so long as the bias isn’t systematic in the data set, right? (Seriously asking this is not an AOS for me lol)
philosobobby.bsky.social
Yeah, I think so. I don’t use the example to teach the details though, but to help students cope with being unsettled by the “biased” course material. I explain that my undergrad prof once told me: “in philosophy, you know more by knowing less”, then I complain about the phrase, and then unpack it.

I love teaching the difference between accuracy and precision for this reason. If your shots are precise but inaccurate, you can sometimes become more accurate—have more shots on target— by having less tight groupings of shots.

One thing that we need to confront is that a lot of institutions folded to Trump without a fight because people with power were sympathetic to Trump. The institutional rot runs deep. As we rebuild, we need to build new media and societal institutions, not just retrofit the broken ones.

I had a liberal centrist — a professional — once tell me that they engage with more diversity at a Bari Weiss dinner party than they do in any mainstream media event.

I mention this because, just as it is true in politics at the moment, some of the calls are coming from inside the house.

Amplifying this because I don't think many people are aware that activists in Chicago are extremely angry at Pritzker right now. He is doing a lot of public bluster but calling ISP to aid ICE against activists on the ground. People need to cool it with the Great Khan stuff until he repents

You give us empty rhetoric. You give Trump’s invading forces an Illinois State Police escort. We know which side you’re on.

This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

There’s an essay to be written about how maga patriotism is just shitty fandom. Anyone who follows sports knows fans like this, it’s always the ref’s fault, the other team doesn’t exist, there’s some plot/player/coach holding the team back otherwise they’d always win easy bsky.app/profile/atru...

Trump: "The problem with Vietnam, we, you know, we stopped fighting to win. We would've won easy. We would've won Afghanistan easy. We would've won every war easy. But we got politically correct. 'Oh, let's take it easy.' We're not politically correct anymore, just so you understand."

Trump is federalizing the National Guard in Illinois against our will—

An affront to American values and an extreme abuse of our military.

He’s terrorizing citizens in attempt to expand his power and punish opponents.

That’s just not who we are.

It’s authoritarian.

🧵 Fascism is an ideology. The government is fascist. But it's an unconsolidated competitive authoritarian regime, not a totalitarian one.

@justinscasey.bsky.social and I discuss this, and the heterogeneity of interwar fascism, here 👇
