Them: The words מלאך and αγγελος don’t really mean ‘angel.’
Me: That’s right.

(I only say this because I’ve been called a priest a couple of times when in clericals, and I just nod along, and then say something about my wife, which becomes really hilarious in this Catholic-heavy community.)

or a pastor! (Rev Black is a pastor, not a priest — Presbyterians wear clericals too!)

The most dangerous person at a protest for a regime is a priest in a collar.

yeah, they have it roughly backwards. the ideal protester isnt an armed cadre who only uses signal, its a retired teacher and grandmother of three who makes the security services decide whether they’re comfortable batoning her to get by

It’s interesting the power of the collar isn’t it—often the clergy who are on the front lines in this stuff are not priests per se (elders, pastors, yes but often not Catholic or episcopal clergy), but there’s great symbolic power in clericals.

it’s really no more complicated than that isn’t it!!
poetinbabylon.bsky.social
For clergy, for instance, paperwork includes ensuring our churches are staffed with qualified and vetted volunteers; or ensuring our member rolls are updated; or communicating with our churches and our denominations about core data re church health; all *essential stuff* that you have expertise for!
poetinbabylon.bsky.social
one of the common errors professionals often have about professional work is that “doing paperwork is onerous & more paperwork means my job is miserable,” when, in fact, paperwork is a necessary consequence of being someone whose expertise in an area is valued & whose discretion is to be relied on?
tznkai.bsky.social
Yeah, I get why doctors and their defenders have this attitude, but it's wrong and it fucks over patients all the time. The doctor should take ownership of getting you appropriate care, which includes filling out the fucking paperwork and doing it correctly. Sure maybe it's beneath them but too bad.
powdercuff.bsky.social
A doctors job is to provide care, not argue with a health insurance rep about why their patient needs a certain medication or procedure. This unnecessary administrative task also adds to the burn out that is rife among healthcare workers. I’m begging yall to read!

I used to tend an urban garden near Rev Black’s church too. Another minister I know, an ECC pastor from Hyde Park, was also accosted by ICE in the recent days. This Chicago stuff hits close to home. 😔

If I’m dead and anybody does a life celebration of me, I’m haunting their ass. No celebrations. Pray for my soul; proclaim the resurrection; beg for mercy on my behalf; I am HOPEFULLY in Purgatory.

who is going to invite me to their butter tasting party?
jerseyoutwest.bsky.social
You would have enjoyed the blind butter tasting party i threw earlier this year. 45 different butters tried and rated in one day.
A table coved in plates of butter. People standing arohnd two tables covered in butter.

well, then that’s a step closer to the original!, it sounds like it got exported from India by the Brits sometime in the mid-19th century (as were many Indian things…)

like, the ladders are ladders of holiness (renunciation, etc.), and the snakes are temptations (lust, etc.) and the final goal is moksha - that's why the game sucks as a game, cause it's *not a game* it's a 13th century Hindu catechetical tool?
poetinbabylon.bsky.social
I recently learned that Snakes & Ladders originated as a game for teaching children the basics of Hindu sanctification, and, y'know what, that's rad.

I am unashamedly an Institutionalist. What that means, to me, is that I have the weight and responsibility to care for a particular institution that, without proper care, will likely die (e.g. my local church), and shape and reshape it so that whenever *I* leave it it is prepared for a BETTER FUTURE
poetinbabylon.bsky.social
"I'm not like those other senators, I'm an OUTSIDER" is a red flag, brother; "I want to bring reason to Congress" are you going to read the dockets, brother???; "I'm going to fight the Man" okay, but if you want to make big changes, you gotta invest in something beyond your own political career
poetinbabylon.bsky.social
when I do end up having coffee with that guy who wants to oust our local fascist, mb one of the first REAL QUESTIONS I'm going to put to him is "are you institutionalist or anti-institutionalist" and if he says "no" I'm going to say, very slowly & firmly, WE NEED INSTITUTION-BUILDERS NOT OUTSIDERS
opinionhaver.bsky.social
ehh I think it's more accurate to say there's a kind of general 'FUCK DA MAN' low social trust style of politics that is sometimes left-inflected and sometimes right-inflected in mostly incoherent ways
kavi.bsky.social
Low social trust leftism is developing in real time, the democrats can lean into this or they can ignore it
