Art history books IN Russian and Polish and Bulgarian. If you have an institution or library or university that wants that, that's AMAZING, would love to talk, but that's the big hurdle from here in northeast Missouri.
My sister and I have been tasked to go through all of my dad's books and there are so many incredible Russian and Polish and Bulgarian art history books that will just... disappear? Because we can't read then and don't have space? And I hate it so much.

These bookshelves are big memories.

This is pretty egregious when you look at the actual context of the quote. And people are praising that book?
A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

"Kavanaugh Stop" went from a skeet on here to Bluesky meme to crosspollinating over on X to Brett Kavanaugh's burner account seeing it there to a whiny defensive footnote about it in a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Juice.
Check out the Kavanaugh FN 4; I think it's pretty clear that the Kavanaugh Stop thing has gotten to him:

American conservatives and other types of fascist have no desire to return to the days of skillful liars.

A person living by a lie told skillfully may have been fooled by the skill.

But to force a person to live according to an obvious lie means you have dominated them.

The system that created Epstein, protected him, and let him thrive for decades, still exists. His market of powerful monsters still exists, and they're still being protected.

There is definitely, right now, someone serving the same role he did, being protected the same way by the same people.

Finally, if you can get through the paywall this piece from earlier in the week illuminates how the experience above is just a tiny part of an industrial-scale, global, and sector-wide catastrophe of AI and citations to nonexistent papers in academic publishing bsky.app/profile/mile...
Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
AI Is Inventing Academic Papers That Don't Exist -- And They're Being Cited in Real Journals
Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.

This is why the whole discussion has focused on academia and journalism. You need a field with no jobs to gin up these bullshit arguments. If you say white men can’t get jobs in corporate America there are no small sample sizes to create fake numbers with, you’re just telling obvious lies
THERE ARE NO JOBS IN ACADEMIA! NO JOBS! DOZENS OF HYPER QUALIFIED APPLICANTS PER JOB!

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

Jews around the world celebrated Hanukkah for centuries before Zionism existed as a political movement. And many of the early rabbis wanted to focus the holiday on the miracle of the lights because they were skeptical of the militarism of the Maccabees.

Before the 1990s, plane crashes caused by microbursts used to kill planeloads of people fairly regularly.

Dr. Ted Fujita and NCAR scientists figured out how to detect microbursts and warn pilots about them.

Since then? Zero airliner crashes from microbursts.

So here's the first item on my wish list:

I want every member of this evil administration hounded to their dying breath for their crimes, including criminal prosecution, incarcelation, and public humiliation.
Good case from @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com for impeaching Pete Hegseth. A key point raised here is that we shouldn't ever assume anything is politically out of reach. Think big and it shapes a better form of opposition politics:

I am deadly serious when I say that any liberal Project 2028 people should be taking names of the civil servants who go way past their authority to do stuff like this.

That is very much not me saying that normal employees following bad orders should be fired. But there’s a line. This crosses it.
That should be a career ending act of corruption
