congratulations to our DB colleague Maria Jasin, recognized by the Greengard Prize! when she started her lab @mskcancercenter.bsky.social, she was the first to insert DNA into a defined location of a mammalian genome! her work underlies today's CRISPR-mediated HDR. here in convo with Rick Lifton.🧬

It is not always safe to repair DNA Damage. Sometimes, cells "just bypass it".

During DNA replication, repair of lesions on DNA can be dangerous. Cells instead "tolerate" DNA damage and focus on finishing replication.

Read our review and find out why and how: doi.org/10.1016/j.ti...

Happy to see this out, great work from Niels, combining kinetic analysis, cryoEM and an unexpected gain-of-function mutant, nice work from master students Jan and Nina, from Kaustav and from Alex for the kinetics

A study in Nature shows that respiratory viruses trigger metastatic breast cancer cells to proliferate in lungs in mouse models of breast cancer. These findings are supported by human observational data. go.nature.com/4l7NZ8l #medsky 🧪
This is figure 2, which shows influenza A virus infection promotes dormant DCC proliferation and phenotypic change.

One often hears that DNA is the blueprint of life. Today, I read a really nice paper that begins with "proteins are the cornerstone of life". By that logic, I might start referring to RNA as the scaffold, and chromatin as the framework that shapes it all.
Regardless, the paper is a must-read:
Comprehensive human proteome profiles across a 50-year lifespan reveal aging trajectories and signatures
Proteins are the cornerstone of life. However, the proteomic blueprint of aging across human tissues remains uncharted. Here, we present a comprehensi…

New #preprint from the lab! Do you want to see the invisible? So did we! When DNA genomes get broken, cells somehow find related sequences to fix the break. But how do they find it? We developed a way to look at sequence *search*, not just sequence usage.
