Figuring it out. Previously UX-focused engineer
There's a lot more noise than signal these days.

Where do the makers and the hackers look for interesting news / inspiration? My RSS feeds dried up a long time ago.

Been playing around with Rust and Bloom filters for common password detection! Using it to create a light-weight WASM package for use on password creation.

I am not employed, this is just for fun, no I don't know why I'm like this.

Luddites wanted to attack the machines that were destroying their cottage industry.

They weren't even wrong. But they were unsuccessful.

May software engineers succeed where they failed.

pretty cool: deer.social configured to point to a self-hosted bsky appview which reads from a self-hosted relay which subscribes to a self-hosted PDS which is where this "hello world" post originated

it's really funny to think about things getting really good in about 120 years from today. an entire earth full of people you will never meet or know, having a great time here in your old house, in your old yard, drinking the same water you did. but happy

If you are a liberal in deep blue territory, one thing you could try doing right now is figuring out how to replace your Democratic member of Congress next year. With very few exceptions, the typical safe seat Dem is not meeting the moment. Find someone who will and help them.

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

“This is like high-level stuff. This isn't $10 or $100. This is in the multi-millions with a president, two presidents, one with his wife and the other is a president. Like, this is... I don't know anyone higher.”

“I'm really fucking scared, man.”

Hey when dealing with Nazi disinformation, remember that repeating it only cements it in people’s heads, even if you actively debunk it.

RFK: antivax brainworm word salad!

You: RFK is pro mass death.

Don’t repeat any of their messaging even to prove it wrong.

When ordered by Nazis to give lists of disabled people by disability severity, some doctors sent back exaggerated data to protect patients from forced work

They didn't know that the "most disabled" were to be killed first

The moral here isn't to tell the truth

It's to never co-operate with Nazis

I do not believe in any tech product where the devs want us to view it with some form of religious awe, a divine gift redefining human experience and bequeathing knowledge unto us humble land apes. I believe in a tech product where the devs are like “this is handy for planning breakfasts”

Most Looney Tunes characters are effectively indestructible but I don’t think that’s true for Pepe Le Pew. I bet if you ran him over with a car he’d just die.

if I were writing stories about the gov "firing thousands of probationary workers" I would probably rewrite as "firing thousands of new hires -- who are often on a status called "probation" --" because I think the general understanding of "probation" is "in trouble for something they did"

Right there in settings you have “Apple Intelligence & Siri” with a toggle just for AI

Flip that switch babyyyy

This lost time will never be recovered. The economic cost to Pennsylvania is enormous and the cost to humanity immeasurable.
