New Year's Resolution Suggestion: Stop apologizing for being "late to the party" with books or films or music or whatever. You are only one person and there's only so much time. You can't experience everything when it's new. It's all right. Get to it when you get it. It'll still be worth the effort.

One of the great things about being a writer is nobody lives rent-free in your head. You wanna stay in there, you're getting put to work. Now get in that story; the monster's hungry.

me: Let's get this WIP finished, we're so close!

brain: Remember that idea we had from 2021 about chimeras? Here's the protagonist, love interest, antagonist, stakes, opening image, worlds home and new, conceit, and theme.

me: Dammit brain.

I've never seen a more accurate description of a book. @dreddieclark.bsky.social you're so correct, this was great fun. Thanks for the recommendation!
Just finished @brentclambert.bsky.social's A Necessary Chaos. Hugely good fun. Gay fever dream Mr & Mrs Smith with interesting science-fantasy dystopian setting. Ridiculous chemistry between the lesds, great action sequences and very effective worldbuilding in a v short page court.

Creators: When you can (and you almost always can), celebrate your fellow creators in public. Take joy in their successes, talk them up to your own fans and friends, and do what you can to make them feel welcome and included in the community we are all part of. It will make everyone's lives better.

Dear debut authors: other debut authors are not your competition, they are your friends, sounding boards, and the only people in your unique position. You should be surrounding yourself with debut people who will champion you, as you should champion them. No dedicated reader ever buys just one book!

There was a post that said this more or less but I can’t find it so: it’s just the worst when you ask someone what their book is about and they’re like “It’s an NB/sapphic enemies to lovers with no bury your gays or fridging!” Ok bestie what’s it about though

My plan for December is to tidy up the mess that came out of NaNo. I edited two chapters and realised, you know what, it came out much better than I thought it would be, given the pressure. #writingcommunity

To my fellow indie authors:

It's that time of year where we see a lot of lists and awards going out. This is your reminder that publishing a book is a huge victory, and even if you don't see your book on those lists, you are amazing. You have achieved something wonderful.

Don't stop. 💛

Some weekends I stare at my WIP and muddle through a lazy paragraph or three. Other weekends I rip through whole chapters, torture characters and sharpen sentences to a razor's edge. This was one of those weekends. Feels good.

Just finished a writeup for a book I was beta-reading, and it occurs to me that I enjoy beta reading at times much more than trad published books. There's so much more variety in structure and so many cool ideas!
