Minnesota transplant. Beard appreciator (moustache envier). I HAD A DOCTORATE IN INDUSTRIAL/ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY BUT ON JULY 1ST 2024 I BARGAINED AWAY MY KNOWLEDGE FOR MADNESS AND A VARIETY OF SILLY COSTUMES AND I HAVE YET TO REGRET THIS EXCHANGE.

Only just orthogonal to the slurs debate, the last week has convinced me we need to bring back the Mid-Atlantic pronunciation of “robot” you’d hear on broadcasts from the 50’s.

You know: robut!, said quickly and with vinegar, terminating in sharp alveolar stop.

Have some fun out there.

Once again, anyone who thinks that our political representatives at the governorship- or federal-level are doing all that they can to protect us...

... is not correct in their assessment.
samhalpert.bsky.social
Governors call on the courts. They call on the public. They never call on their executive powers as the leaders of sovereign states in our federal system.

Call on the troops to refuse unconstitutional orders, @governor.ca.gov. Call on your commanders to recognize you haven’t relayed any orders.

"The commander-in-chief is using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens," Newsom said. "We will take this fight to court, but the public cannot stay silent in the face of such reckless and authoritarian conduct by the president of the United States."

This is key. There is a big difference, symbolically and discursively, between "everyone pays into the big welfare fund, which then goes to people in need in all sorts of specific ways to ensure everyone is taken care of at the end" and "you are being specifically taxed for being a non-parent."

Thankfully, an additional someone else did a better job of articulating things than me!
dov.bsky.social
yes i will in fact endorse fiscally equivalent policies if the reasoning is "to make sure children eat" and not endorse them if the reasoning is "because childless people are inferior"
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
Thank you! I tried to articulate this on a different thread and did a poor job of it.

YOU HAVE SAID THE WORDS I WAS TRYING TO AND I THANK YOU FOR IT.

IF THEY WERE TO GET JUST FIVE DOLLARS FROM EVERY AMERICAN WHOSE HEART CRIES OUT AT THE ONGOING INJUSTICE THEN THEY WOULD HAVE FIVE DOLLARS FROM EVERY AMERICAN WHOSE HEART CRIES OUT AT THE ONGOING INJUSTICE!

Clarifying question for you:

Were the human-polished entries counted as written by a human?
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
Ah, my mistake! I glossed over the additional element.

Much appreciated correction, thank you!

🙃
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
I am very much in support of "society should share the financial costs of raising children," and also dislike the "childless people must pay" variation.

My dislike of the second phrase comes from its connotations rather than its content. Stupid human brains! Wonderful human brains!
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
Survey psychologist, here! (Hopefully to the rescue!)

And this is why the specific words we use to frame issues is so important. It sucks that our brains are fantastic at responding differently to basically the same concepts but phrased in varying ways, but here we are.

Simple principle: if it would be a war crime when done to enemy soldiers, then it shouldn’t be done to civilians by the US government
asharangappa.bsky.social
One of the (many) legal gaps that needs to be filled after this nightmare is over is to prohibit federal law enforcement agencies from using federal funds to create propaganda videos with anyone in custody. This is all about spectacle and content creation, remove the incentive and the means
smith.senate.gov
Weird how that didn’t make the cut.

Every time someone is upset with me for screaming at my elected representatives, I want them to consider the unused powers at their disposal. Not just legislative power, but the influence that ONLY the wealthy elite can wield.
senategabe.bsky.social
I don't think people understand just how many options they have available to them and what some very basic maneuvers can do. This is a problem that only exists because of their complacency in the face of an unfathomably grave crisis.

Non-judgment followup question:

Do you also enjoy breads that have been wetted in non-water things?

- Soaked in gravy?
- Bread pudding?

While watered bread probably isn't for me, you are reminding me of many things I LOVE!

I had a book on waterfowling back in the day and I will always remember the sentence “The best reason to kill and eat a goose is that a goose would absolutely kill and eat you, given the opportunity.”

It troubles me that I’m starting to feel the same way about Bluesky that I do about the UK. Like: it sounds great, and some of the people I know are great, but the leadership is making some weird choices and I’m a bit worried it may all be over in a couple of years.

seeing otherwise smart people share the story that a south carolina judge’s beach house was burned to the ground because of a ruling against trump despite there being no evidence of that has been frustrating. just because the other side has abandoned facts doesn’t mean we can, too.
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
Again, this is an EXPLANATION from cognitive psychology and NOT A JUSTIFICATION.

The only advice that I can offer is the behavior I modeled at the top of my thread. Acknowledge your error publicly, and try to remember the error (as our brains try to forget errors to make us feel better).
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
So now there's a new incentive: should I spend the time and energy (literally burning calories, a thing our brains HATE doing) to investigate this single issue among dozens of others, or should I rely on the framing that judges are being explicitly targeted (which has actual supportive evidence)?
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
This doesn't excuse me, or any of us!

Now, here's the present issue: the media environment has been thoroughly contaminated with lies and bad faith actors. Much of what we hear from the federal government is lies. Many of us are also experiencing this at the state & local level, too.
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
Despite being one of the most intelligent species we know of, humans are still quite bad at thinking. Whenever there is an incentive to use quick and dirty methods that don't involve actual logic and facts, we ALL take the ease route unless we're thoroughly trained in the specific subject.
seltsamerweise.bsky.social
I'd like to address this as a psychologist for a moment. Beforehand, I'll out myself as jumping to conclusions on this particular issue, and say it as plainly as I can:

I WAS OUTRIGHT WRONG, AND WILL TRY TO DO BETTER.

Now, for the psychological context.
