I need two people to come with me tonight to break into the local billionaire’s house at midnight dressed as ghosts. I’ll explain everything tomorrow when we are feasting on the prized turkey from the butcher’s window.

All of these bootlegged copies of the 60 Minutes segment flooding my feed (saying, ‘Watch it quick! Before it disappears!’) makes me feel like I’m in the Soviet Union and just got some black market foreign newspaper I need to hide under a floorboard in my house.

This is where America is now

I think a lot about how dangerous this all is from the point of view of someone who once went into a ghost hunting experience for tourists ironically, with the goal of live-blogging it afterwards, and ended up crying in the Victoria BC Maritime Museum because the dowsing rods didn't summon my mom

also, by the way

a lot of us process our grief by making art

they're trying to replace that process with AI from both directions

it's also an act of generous creative imagination

sometimes when I really need my mom, and she's not here, I have to think about like, okay when she was being her best self, what might she say or do in this situation? it's a story we tell ourselves that gives comfort and meaning. no app can do that

it's not just that I find it chilling to imagine Sam Altman wearing my dead mom's face in order to sell me ads

it's that the way we ACTUALLY keep our lost loved ones alive requires a myriad of human skills these assholes perpetually devalue, like storytelling and deep emotional connection

your AI algorithm (or worse, the underpaid and horribly treated remote worker in India somewhere you are forcing to pretend to be your AI algorithm) doesn't know my dead mom. *I* know my dead mom. *I* know what she'd say to me. learning to give *yourself* that guidance is what wisdom looks like

we talk a lot about the weirdo techbro obsession with immortality these AI necromancy projects embody, but I'm arguably even MORE fascinated by the terror of allowing yourself to experience deep, complex emotions they so obviously reveal

you cannot prevent yourself from feeling grief with an app??

I hate these people but I gotta admit a giant statue of Prometheus actually goes hard, especially because the project will inevitably be canceled and go unfinished and then we'll have an unfinished statue of Prometheus as a monument to these people's hubris and that is so poetic
Conservative-leaning tech investors are racing to build a new American colossus, and they want something much, much bigger than the Statue of Liberty. Meet the new monuments men of the tech right and their plans for statue-maxing:

America’s Tech Right Is Obsessed With Building Giant Statues
With proposals for a 450-foot statue of Prometheus on Alcatraz and a 650-foot George Washington, MAGA adherents are racing to build America’s largest statue.

GRRM expressed frustration in his latest blog post that people online say he will never finish The Winds of Winter.

Like most people, GRRM's problem would be solved by getting off the internet and doing something else. Like most of us, he will not do it. An icon of the age.

Basically every time I have to grab a lime I hear “I’ll just grab a lime. I’m saved by the buoyancy of citrus!”

It’s not even a great joke, considering some of his other work, but it’s worn deep into a groove of my brain.
Everyone has one Mitch Hedberg joke stashed in their brain like a squirrel to sustain them whenever they need to feel joy for 30 seconds and mine is “they say the recipe for Sprite is Lemon and Lime but I tried to make it at home, there’s more to it than that”

At the risk of sounding corny, hope really is a practice. I’m as much of a cynical depresso as the next person. The reason why I find doomerism so toxic is that it forecloses the possibility of a better future. The devils want us to fall into despair.

If you were asked to prove your citizenship right now, how would you do it?

If birthright citizenship is disrupted, your birth certificate may not be sufficient. Now what?

Your parents are citizens, you say? Sure. How do you prove that?

See the problem?
