As it turns out, the reason you have to learn things like balancing electrons has only a very little to do with chemistry. The curriculum is about learning how to solve a varied set of problems. Which, given your chosen major, is actually super important. Comp is similar to successful legal writing.

I'm sorry someone narrowed your potential for joy and curiosity so much that learning about poetry became a chore. Try to look at possibilities beyond the cynical hyper-capitalist present, and think of the things that have meaning in your humanity - friends, art, music etc. Education leads to more!

Is it too much to ask to get a criminal justice degree without having to also be required to spend $800 to balance chemical equations for some reason? The election valence of Mercury is irrelevant. It’s useful to someone, but it’s not useful to me.

Counterpoint: My dad hired mathematicians to do reactor shielding design. He said the best candidates came from small liberal arts colleges, because they had a more-general education. The ones with more specialized educations couldn't find creative solutions or see defects in their own analyses.
